I stepped out on the deck this morning to smell the air and heard a rustling in the leaves. I had to walk along the path and listen until I saw the beetle butt in the air as it dug into the ground. I assume they are nocturnal since I see them at night or like this one trying to bury itself for the day.

Like most things, you can easily hold them behind their head and the thing generally can't bite you. Unless a scorpion of something similar
