Huge Grain Run, Wrestling Tournament, Medals! - Saturday
I was up way to early yesterday morning. 3:30am my body decided that it was time to no longer stay in bed but I managed a bit of dozing on the couch for a bit longer. I finally got headed out the door for town at 5am and I was greeted by a fluffy half inch of snow that had just fallen.
The snow stopped a few miles south of the farm and the bulk of my drive was in 2 wheel drive. I got the the Steam Plant to find the fairly well frozen barrels of grain waiting for me.
8 barrels which I managed to get condensed into 6 which all went on the trailer. I mashed some of the grain in between the barrels on the trailer as an overflow means.
It took me a good 15 minutes to get the barrels loaded due to the shoveling. Thankfully the barrels weren't fully solid so they were able to be combined.
I drove across downtown to the other brewery where I had 5 barrels waiting for me. I used one of the empties I was going to drop off and combined the 3 trash cans into it and the other 2 barrels. All 3 got loaded into the bed of the truck for the drive back to the farm.
It is really getting towards springtime now as it is getting light earlier. It was still dark this time of the morning a few weeks ago.
It was a half hour longer than my regular grain runs due to all the shoveling. As I got close to home I hit the snow again a few miles south but luckily it wasn't that slick. Once home I parked the truck and trailer for the day until after the wrestling tournament when I would have more time to work.
The tournament was in Springdale, a small town a half hour north of us where one of our friends used to live. Both boys got weighed in then we had the long wait for the tournament to start. We got there about 8:15am and the first pairing wasn't until after 10am.
The kids all warmed up on the mats for a good while and there was quite the mass of them. The 5-6 year olds had a massive number in the bracket, it was rather amazing to watch them all file back to the pairing room.
R wrestled first and he showed a massive improvement from last year. He was scrambling really well and was seemingly a good bit stronger than either of his opponents.
It was also nifty that he was on the same mat for both matches which was right by our seats.
Thanks to a forfeit by his last opponent he won first place in his bracket!
J had a bye on his first round so he had a while to wait for his first actual match. He ended up having 3 matches due to the double elimination setup.
He lost one match but in the end he came out with his first medal from wrestling with a 3rd place finish in his bracket. He was quite a bit happier than he looks as he was pretty worn out from the day.
It was a longer day than last year's tournaments but it was close so not terrible. On the way to the car R ran in front of me and we both hit the ground with me getting a gnarly wound to my knee and his head hit the ground in the fall. It made the drive home a bit more difficult as I tried to dab at the wound on my right knee.
Once home I had to get the grain unloaded with a quite painful fresh wound. I was surprised that I was able to get the trailer backed into the sheep pen and it took some serious work to get the frozen grain out of the barrels. Thankfully they were all partial barrels with the rim cut off so the grain slides out WAY easier. You can see some of the chunks still in the shape of the barrel.
I was feeling run down and sore so I slammed my truck backwards into the garden after dropping the trailer and just dumped the 3 barrels into a big pile. I had no desire to deal with spreading it out now and will figure that out later. Where the pile is is where the greenhouse will be built so the soil will do well to have the mass of grain in it.
UFC 285 was on and Jon Jones did not disappoint, he won his belt easily over Gane. Surprising that Valentina lost her belt but she will likely get it back soon. Joe Rogan was talking during the broadcast and said that the number one skill for MMA is wrestling. When I told R that he got a wry smile on his face and nodded. He has said he wants to do MMA when he gets stronger and better at wrestling so that seemed to make his day.
This morning has not been great so far, I am still feeling the effects of whatever this bug is, my guts are still not happy. The dog seems to have found the wad of spent material from making glycerin that got dumped in the chicken yard as he is all kinds of messed up this morning. This time I know what is going on and will let him sleep it off today. My skin is actually getting better now that we are home from the trip and I am eating a bit more normally so my hope is I can be back to the hot tub in a week or so.
