Last Wrestling Tournament, Fire, RADISH HARVEST, Grilling - Saturday

avatar

Yesterday was the last tournament for the season. We were up and headed north abut 8:30 and managed to find ourselves a spot to sit near the rest of the team. R went out and got warming up with D who is to the left of him in the pic. They were in scouts together so are friends and spent the warmup time together.

The event is named in memory of a man who wrestled at the school, got cancer and still wrestled, gave back a bunch to the school and they have now built a wrestling building on the campus and are trying to name it after him.

The tournaments are an exercise in controlled chaos and it takes much of my being to be able to sit amongst the masses and wait for his next matches.

His first match was against a kid a bit stronger than him.

In one of the first tumbles R came up holding his side and arm in pain which was a harbinger for the rest of the matches.

He got pinned and was lying in pain on the mat so I went out to him quickly to make sure he was physically okay which I got a 5 out of 10 pain response. I felt bad for him but he didn't seem to much in pain after the match.

He got a bye for the next match and then a couple hours later he had his 2nd match. The match went really fast as the other kid kinda gave up. R got his win for the day in 33 seconds.

The last match for the day was for 3rd place and the arm issue came back.

He re3ally did fight hard the whole time but I could tell that his arm was bothering him and it made it too difficult for him to manage to match and the pain.

It was a really solid bout and R did fight the whole time, many8 of the adults around the mat commented as much after.

He was REALLY NOT HAPPY losing the match as he was really wanting the 3rd place medal. I've not seen him that upset before and it lasted all the way on the drive until we pulled into Dollar General in Elk that he perked up and the anguish disappeared. They came out with handfuls of Pokemon stuff and soon we were back on the farm.

It rained for much of the morning and had moved off for the afternoon. I got the fire going in the pit and added as many of the dry pine needles as I could. Much of the pile is still super wet.

First harvest of the year was a nice handful of radishes from the greenhouse. A dozen nice sized and VERY mild tasting got picked and were almost instantly devoured when in the house.

While waiting on the boys to get the potatoes done I was throwing some darts and again found my aim is improving pretty steadily.

After they finally got the potatoes going I was able to get the burgers on the grill.

I toasted the buns quickly after.

After a few shows we put music on for the evening then by 9pm we were out soaking, later than normal but it was a Saturday night.

I'm sore this morning from all the sitting and the chaos of the tournament, I'm not a fan of crowds. It's raining today so will be cooler and I have to try and get this damned stepper motor to work, solder the header pins to the new Cube Cell LoRa, fix the arm on my chair after one of the bolts broke that holds it on, actually plant the spinach seeds I have been meaning to get in the ground, and then come up with something for dinner.

Despite not finishing 3rd, you must be a proud dad. Wrestling is very demanding and for your boy to continue despite having an injured arm says a lot about him.

Glad to see that his being upset was squashed after purchasing some Pokémon cards. That worked now, but if he continues to wrestle, which I imagine he will, it may cost you a few more bucks in the future if he loses. 😁
I've said this before, but I'll say it again anyway, I love seeing kids being helpful around the homestead. Having chores builds character. In these times giving a kid some chores seems to be a thing of the past. All too frequently I hear parents say, "It's easier to do it myself rather than argue over it" In my book that's just poor parenting. My dad was in the armed services, a great father, and when he said it was time to do something you jumped to attention and got the job done.

Love radishes, I'm jealous. 😁
Some impressive stats, especially the number of days you've posted in a row.
How do you do it all, being as busy as you are?

Yeah I'm really proud of him for not quitting. Wrestling is a crazy sport for kids and I remember it well from my childhood. So much chaos at the tournaments. Thankfully the season is short so we won't be needing to spend that much to placate... lol.

Chores are a must for kids, of some kind. It's really obvious which people didn't have them as a kid, I see them all the time in the wild and they stand out. I can empathize with the "just do it myself" as I have the same mentality a lot but it has gotten better as I have enforced the chores rule more.

I am a morning person so am able to get my posts done before the day gets going. Work ethic is a core part of my being.

Flemingfarm could be a camp for teaching kids the responsibilities that should come along with being part of a family. I am sure some parents could pick up a thing or two.

I'm also an early riser, at least the body gets out of bed early, and the mind tends to want to sleep in.

Have a great day.

Wrestling with cancer is indeed crazy. I wonder how the man was able to do that but it shows that he loves the job a lot. Even though R wasn’t at the top position, he deserves to be appreciated because of his effort
He can always do better and I hope you continue to motivate him as the best father in the world😀

Children should be involved in such activities as it makes them physically stronger.

So sorry your boy got injured right away. That makes the rest of the day so tough. But he persevered, so good for him! Congrats on the radish harvest! That greenhouse is so nice!
