On Wednesday night, AC Milan take on FC Porto at home in the two clubs' second clash in three weeks, when the Champions League group stage enters its fourth round.

The two clubs occupy the bottom two places in Group B, which in addition to Milan and Porto, consists of Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. AC Milan is at the bottom with zero points after three defeats so far, while FC Porto has four points after a victory at home against AC Milan in the last round of games and a draw away from home against Atletico Madrid.

AC Milan must be said to be a major European club under the auspices of CL. As many as seven times, the Milan club have lifted the trophy with the big ears, most recently in the 06/07 season, where Liverpool were beaten 2-1 in the final. However, the Italian big club has had a difficult period in recent years, which is why they are in the Champions League for the first time in eight years this season.

FC Porto have also tried to win the Champions League. It has succeeded twice, most recently in the 03/04 season, where a convincing 3-0 victory over AS Monaco secured the Portuguese big club their second CL triumph. FC Porto has, unlike Wednesday's Italian opponent, been part of the finest football club in the last ten seasons, though without going further than the quarter-finals.

Wednesday's opponents have met each other ten times before, most recently of course in the last round of this year's CL group game, where FC Porto won 1-0 at home at the Estadio do Dragao on a goal by Colombian Luis Diaz after just over an hour of play. Before this match, however, we have to go all the way back to 2003 to find the latest showdown. Here the two clubs meet in the UEFA Super Cup after AC Milan had won the Champions League and Porto had won the UEFA Cup. Here, AC Milan won 1-0 on a goal by the legendary Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko.

Both clubs are in a shared first place in their respective leagues. AC Milan are side by side with Napoli after 11 matches, with both clubs having 31 points. This weekend, the Milan club secured their seventh league victory in a row when AS Roma were defeated away by 1-2. AC Milan still have their first defeat to their credit, as so far it has been ten wins and a single draw away to Juventus.

FC Porto also tops the domestic league, where they are on point with Sporting Lisbon, which also participates in this year's Champions League group stage. Both clubs have 26 points after 10 matches, closely followed by Benfica, who have 25 points. This weekend, FC Porto won 4-1 at home against Boavista and, like AC Milan, still have the first league defeat of the season to their credit.
