Neck pain and 100 kilometers in three hours... my training diary entry from February 21 2026

I hope you are all well. Unfortunately, I'm not doing so well.
Yesterday, another longer basic training session was on the agenda. So I started to warm up. But during the very first stretching exercise, I felt a sharp pain in my neck. Presumably, a vertebra slipped out and back in briefly during a wrong movement, causing a muscle to harden.This was, and still is, the new situation I find myself in. I can only turn my head to the right with pain, and last night was once again extremely restless, as I woke up with every little movement.
Be that as it may, I finished my stretching after a few more exercises that focused on my legs, hoping that I could cycle relatively pain-free despite my neck. Fortunately, this was possible, and the pain even subsided a little during my training session.
Since this was meant to be a base training session, I tried to keep my heart rate in Zone 2 for as long as possible. I managed this for about 1.5 hours. It probably would have been better for the training effect if I had then shifted into a lower gear and tried to keep my heart rate down. However, a side quest suddenly popped into my head – 100 kilometers in three hours. So I just kept pedaling and accepted that my heart rate would now be in Zone 3. Towards the end, I even slipped into Zone 4. After three hours, I got off the bike and ticked the successful side quest off my list.

Since I slept terribly due to my neck pain, and yesterday's three-hour session definitely took its toll, I should really be resting today. However, apart from my neck, I actually feel quite good and feel like doing a little cycling.
In about an hour, a two-and-a-half-hour football talk show starts on TV. I think I'll watch it from my bike. Let's see how long I can last.

I think cycling is okay for my neck. It's actually more uncomfortable when I just lie on the sofa.
