Hike to the Wendelsteinhaus... my training diary entry from May 30 2026

(Here you can see the Wendelstein Church, which was built in 1889 and is considered Germany's highest-situated church. It is situated at an altitude of 1,790 meters.)
Hi Actifitters,
yesterday, my wife, a friend, and I headed into the Mangfall Mountains, specifically to the Wendelstein, which is the highest peak (1838 m) there.
We left home around 8:00 AM and headed toward our destination using public transport. Since taking public transport in the Munich area has been a chaotic mess for ages, the journey to the starting point alone took three hours.
But anyway... at 11 o'clock, we finally set off on the ascent. Since my wife and our acquaintance aren't quite at my fitness level, I had to wait for them every now and then. But that wasn't a problem at all, as I wasn't exactly feeling fit myself anyway. The evening before, I had gone to a beer garden with some colleagues and had managed to get a mere four and a half hours of sleep. In the end, the ascent to the Wendelsteinhaus took three hours and 40 minutes. During this time, we covered a distance of 9.5 kilometers and 1,200 meters of elevation gain.
Upon reaching the top, we initially agreed to skip the descent and take the cable car down to the valley instead. However, after a short break - complete with an ice-cold beer and a delicious snack - we ultimately decided to hike back down on foot after all.
Since we chose a different route for the descent than the one we took on the way up, my Garmin watch showed only 6 kilometers at the end. We took one hour and 50 minutes to cover this distance. However, once we were down in the valley, we took a slight detour to buy ourselves a celebratory ice cream at the nearest supermarket.
At 6 p.m., our train departed for home. After another nearly three hours, I was finally standing under the shower. Aside from the interminable journey there and back, it was a wonderfully lovely day filled with plenty of quality time.
Today, I will be pedaling at a low intensity. I don't want to put too much strain on my legs, as I am experiencing quite noticeable muscle soreness from hiking. While it is nowhere near as bad as it was after my Kehlstein tour, yesterday’s outing certainly didn't leave me entirely unscathed.
