I don't know about that story, because that's just terrible risk management by the bookies and they deserve to lose money.
The whole idea of the bookie business model is to get as close to a green book as possible, meaning they win no matter what the outcome of the actual race.
They'll sometimes do their own analysis and be overweight certain favourites, but if they didn't lay their risk off with someone else on those long shot runners, then that was their decision and they fucked themselves.
