Nice ride!
Cycling indeed brings you to places you normally wouldn't have seen.
I've been cycling for quite a while, but I still discover new places, new streets in towns and beautiful cycling paths every now and then.
And as your distance increases you'll even discover more.

So when planning my trip I usually look at the wind direction and let that decide which way I am going

Are you also using Windfinder for that?

I'm using Google Maps to roughly plan where I'm going, the 'measure distance' tool is awesome!

I'm using Komoot for that. It knows all the cycling routes. Shows you the distance, elevation and even the type of road.
You can create routes, save them in your account and even export them to a GPX file for navigation devices.
I've paid for the complete European map once, but I think it is still free to use if you have one county.

Good that you keep your chain clean! That keeps your bicycle running smoothly and prevents other parts to wear out quickly.
Your chain also needs to be replaced every once in a while. They say you need to do this between 1000 and 2000 kilometers. I have a chain measuring tool, so I can easily see when my chain needs to be replaced.
I also have the tools to replace it myself. Quite an easy job to do and the tools are cheap. That might be a good investment if you keep making more kilometers.
