Errands

1000028090.jpg

Life is full of the need to do so many small things, I'd say insignificant things but many are not that at all, and it seems there's less and less time to do them, for me at least.

Because I have to travel away from home for work for days on end I have to be time-efficient when I'm home especially because I don't want to waste time that could be better spent with my girlfriend or in other such pleasurable ways; fitting a lot into a little is what I try to do but sometimes fitting them in means doing them when I'd least like to, like today.

Today I'm zigging when my girlfriend is zagging - we have gone separate ways to cover more ground.

It sucks because today is a day off work for me and running errands is not what I'd prefer to be doing, but life sometimes conspires against our best intentions or hopes.

It's 10:50 and I just drank that coffee in the image after running a few errands at the mall: Podiatrist, my health insurer, the motor vehicle/licensing office, the book store and optometrist were all within walking distance and all have been completed.

After this post I'll be off to the doctor, chemist and the gun shop before meeting my girl for lunch, catching up on how her day has been and moving on to finish the last two errands on my list, the hospital and my mechanic's workshop. Exhausting? Nope, just frustrating to have to burn a whole day off in this way. But that's life sometimes right?

Tonight we have a date-night planned, a restaurant, and then will watch a few episodes of the show we're currently watching before bed and Tuesday...work.

I've been known to whinge about this sort of thing I guess, sort of whinging now I suppose, but in truth it's just a part of life; the need to get things done, to be responsible and to take ownership. Life depends on it in my opinion and because I value my life, want to live it the best I can, I do what's required when it's required.

Do you ever have "errand days" where you try to cram as much of the boring but necessary stuff into? Is it a planned day like mine due to a heavy schedule or do you do them randomly? Let me know your strategy in the comments...if you want to.

I get you, I have sometimes one day of the weekend that's full of duties like this to be done and it's annoying because I'd like to do better things instead of go to buy clothes, buy stuff at the mall... But it's necessary to do that so not much to do about it, they gotta be done

Being an adult is sometimes complicated and often we have to do what we don't really want to do I guess. Oh well, we can't go back to being children...although we can act like children huh?

Oh man I would so much love to go back when I was a children, everything was so easy and stressless... Funny how when you are little you want to grow up, and when you are grown you want to go back

We can act like children but not always, that would be irresponsible 😅

Yeah, being a kid was fun but I don't mind being an adult. As for being irresponsible, I'm the anthesis of irresponsible. (That means the opposite.)

It's always frustrating when things don't go my way especially when I know I need time for myself which I only get on Sundays. For some Sundays now I haven't been able to attend church because of some impromptu errands that always comes at the last minute but even though I have no choice, I still have to go

After running the errands especially on Sundays, I immediately head back home and devote some time to study my bible and pray, and when that is done I try as much as possible to take a stroll around the neighbourhood for fresh air and then find a quiet place to read some books I got from the bookstore.

I don't pray so do not lose time to that but I certainly lose time to errands and chores. I guess we all have commitments we need to attend to.

In my case, it's tricky that my working hours are fixed, and I have weekends off (when nothing from the administration works).
So if I have to go to the bank, the municipality, or some other institution, then I plan one day to finish everything, then I take a day off from work.
That day, it's like in a movie, I run left, wait, run right, wait, run...
And when it comes to weekends and chores around the house, I plan them for both days in the morning, to have the second part of the day free.
First, let's finish the shopping, and on the second day, prepare the house (washing the windows, vacuuming, arranging the flowers, ironing the laundry...)

Yeah, it's often difficult when fixed working hours means no week days in which to do small tasks. I'm fortunate that I have some flexibility with my organisation.

I don't like to live a planned and scheduled life all the time but I find my life is better when things like errands are planned out; it means I get them done efficiently and have more time to spend in unplanned ways.

I have noticed that we often prejudge the significance of our actions. We call the things we HAVE TO do insignificant, and the things we WANT to do significant.

Small things are hardly noticeable. But it is these small touches that make up the picture of our day, shape the atmosphere, and create what can be called “quality of life.”

There's always things I have to do like going to the hospital; not doing that would mean I'd never have to do anything else ever again because I'd be dead. But yeah, it's important to make the distinction between have to do and want to do otherwise time and effort is spend doing the wrong things at the wrong times.

It seems you've really had your day all planned out and that's pretty good if you ask me, because sometimes I wake up not knowing exactly what to do because the previous day I didn't make plans and schedules for the next day just like today.
I woke up not having any major tasks or errands planned out, just the little insignificant chores here and there which is a normal daily routine for me.
I do have errand days at times though, going from one place to another_ooops, this just made me remember that I actually do have one errand to run today lol, thanks for this post. Do have a lovely day and ofcourse beautiful moments with your girl, my regards to her

If I don't plan days like this I tend to forget something or get sidetracked; either way, that puts pressure on the other days so I'd rather plan. There's days when no planning takes place of course, I love those days, but today was definitely strategic.

So...it seems my little post prompted you to remember that little errand of yours. See? I knew there was a good reason to make this post! 😊

Be well.

Well, for me I like planning my day ahead, so it's really sickening for me that I'm currently waking up each day without a major plan and just living the day as it comes.
But it's okay, I will be fine.

Yes your post did, thanks again for that, I'm already preparing to hit the road for that errand.

Yes, I have had and still have those days when I have errands to run or things I don't like doing but have to do. What I try to do is get the things I dislike the most done first and as quickly as possible, so that I can then feel relieved and reward myself with things I enjoy. That's my strategy and it works for me. I try to plan as best I can, within the limits of what I can control.

Yeah, moving the big rocks are the best way to make the day better, things get easier from there.

I really felt that opening sentence.

Whinging/complaining is fine as long as you're actually trying to resolve or work around the problem.

And the book shop and the gun shop sounds like things that would have been fun I hope XD

All of my days are kind of packed (counting the buffer hours I have to leave in between for transit times and overflow) so I basically just have a day with less important tasks/errands that can be skipped without everything crashing and burning that I try to put all bigger errands/appointments on but that doesn't always work (I'm too ded on the errand day so they get put off to later, appointments can only be scheduled on any other day and usually on the one that I can't logistics).

You'll have more time when the kids are older/moved out they said XD

It's interesting that no matter how busy I get o manage to get everything done; humans are very adaptable I guess.

I look at my friends with kids and wonder how they get things done but they do; we all just fit the jigsaw pieces together and it works out I suppose huh?

I was actually just thinking about this the other day while I was out mowing my lawn. My neighbor pays to have his mowed and I was thinking how lazy, but really he is just buying himself more time to spend with his wife or doing other things. I'm still on the fence about whether it is smart of just lazy... My wife comments sometimes that we feel more like roommates as we are occasional always going in different directions. Those moments are short lived thankfully!

There's loads of ways a person can be lazy and numerous time-saving techniques. I guess it comes down to what is done with the time a person saves through delegation.

Yes, that is probably true. Spending the time you save wisely.

I've had those days of running errands, and it's incredible how much time they take. A few days ago, I went to the fabric store and it took me over four hours to select fabrics and haberdashery accessories. Completing the to-do list was stressful, but by the end of the afternoon, I was able to get it done.

Best regards!

Four hours at the fabric store? That sounds like my worst nightmare. 🥴

The fabric store is my favorite, there is so much to see that time passes very quickly, if I go with my friend the tour is longer, check each space thoroughly.

Hey bro! When days like these are occasional, you can deal with them, but several days in a row like this are really awful. By the time I'm responding to your message, you must have already had that fun moment with your girlfriend, and that makes everything else worthwhile. You know you can handle anything, brother. I hope you have a powerful Tuesday! ✌️

It's not Monday night here yet hahaha, but I'm fine bro. Finally on a well-deserved vacation. I'm glad everything is going well ✌️

I only have errand days. There's always something on my To-do-List, no matter how free a day is supposed to be. At least when I'm at home. When I'm off for vacation, that's a different story. But I can't take vacation at home. It just doesn't work, well, it does too much, it doesn't rest.

I started to cover fun things in my to-do-list. Things that I usually don't give myself the time to do, that are for me, and just me. Eating out. Playing a few songs on the guitar and sing to them. Read a few pages. Doesn't mean that I don't enjoy work, I do love my job, and I like to cross things off my list.

On thing about hive is that I can see it a little bit like a work thing, due to those little numbers in the right corner of each article I write. That plays a neat trick to my workaholic mind - it's not only fun, it's also work. So, it's easier to take the time.

I actually like to space them out unless there is efficiency gains from bunching them together. Don't have a strong reason as well, probably just a personal preference.

We all do things differently based on the situations and time-constraints we have; there's no right or wrong way, just your way.

Well, yes, one might think it's a wasted day off, but if you look at it another way, you're lucky because you had a day off to do necessary and important things as a grown-up. When we're little, we want to grow up, but that's when we don't imagine all the boring and sometimes complicated things adults have to do. But there are many interesting things in your day, you are very organized, and in a short time you have been able to check off a lot of pending tasks, and I suppose you were able to finish everything by the end of the day.

It's nice that you can differentiate between what is necessary and what is important, like spending quality time with your girlfriend. I hope that those important things were also checked off your list at the end of the day.

I am the worst at organizing my time, and many times I fail because I can't do everything I need to do and have planned in a very short time.

What actions are you taking to get better at managing/organising your time?

I've tried to organize myself better, not to try to do everything I haven't done in weeks in a single day. But the truth is that I'm still not very good at it.🥵

Maybe you'll get better at it someday, but I think only through actively seeking to improve will improvement actually come.

I definitely haven't lost hope in myself, ha ha ha. It's always worth striving to be a better version of yourself, and I'm still working on improving my time management skills. I hope I don't die trying 😆😅.

That's good to hear, losing hope in oneself rarely ends up well. Good luck.
