Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races

In this post, I want to share some pictures of the last Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races in the Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade.
You may know that this competition is always one week after the Dragon Boat Festival, which is usually in late May or sometime in early June.

I have mentioned that this festival is a traditional festival around China. Families celebrate by going to the riverside to see the dragon boat races and eating sticky rice dumplings in Chinese called Zongzi, where the ingredients are rice, green beans, lotus seeds, roaster pork and dried eggs, yolks wrapped in bamboo leaves or lotus leaves and steamed for few hours.

Some families prepare sticky rice at home. However, some prefer to buy from the markets or some traditional shops, or you can pre-order a set of different flavours.

Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races every year takes two days, Saturday and Sunday, and fortunately, this year, the weather was good because it was sunny for the two days. The races did not get interrupted as the previous year when some races needed to be delayed due to the rain, and they lasted until 7:00 pm; this year, the races started at 8:00 am and finished at 5:30 pm.

I like how the organizer allocates beach umbrellas along the seaside for spectators to protect from the sun, which is hot these days, around 34 Celcius degree.

Also, it is nice to see how they decorate the entrance with traditional Chinese decorations, representing the atmosphere of the competition and the flags of the organizers.

This year is not as crowded as the previous years, because in the past it was very hard to find an empty spot to take pictures of the races except if you went early to occupy a place, which I think is because it was so sunny and hot. More people come in the afternoon when the weather becomes fresher.

I heard a lot about the Dragon Boat festival, but for me, the most attractive part was making Zongzi and enjoying it. Sweet, spicy rice dumplings made with love and care... International Dragon Boat Races seem fun, a festival that everyone enjoys...Good to see you posting again...
