My Actifit Report Card: January 2 2024 🕰️ Time capsule / タイムカプセル

I have been back to my hometown since December 29th of last year.

I was born and raised in Shizuoka Prefecture, but left my hometown when I entered university. Since then, I only come back once or twice a year during summer vacation and New Year's holidays. When I return home, I sometimes take a walk around my house, but the scenery has changed so much, both around my house and in the town as a whole, that I sometimes feel as if I have wandered into an unknown place.

This evening I went for a walk by myself to my old elementary school. I enjoyed my elementary school days. When I was about to graduate, I buried a time capsule in the corner of the playground with some of my friends who were good friends at that time. I hardly remember what we put in the time capsule, it was probably a letter to my future self, or a picture.... but I remember who the members were who dug the hole together and buried the time capsule jar.

However, since I have lost all connection with those friends since then, about 30 years have passed without any opportunity to dig it up. I buried it with a friend, so I couldn't dig it up by myself.... I wondered what happened to it now, so I went near the playground today and was surprised.

Before we knew it, the elementary school building had been reconstructed and the place where we buried our time capsule had been concreted over. We thought that the school building would be renewed, but the location of the playground would never be changed. What happened to our time capsule? Were they dug out and disposed of during the construction process, or are they still sleeping under this concrete?

In any case, I doubt that I will ever hold that time capsule in my hands again in the future. I guess we will never be able to see the contents forever either. I feel both a sense of disappointment and a sense that maybe this is for the best.

The barely familiar playground equipment, the path I (reluctantly) ran on during an endurance run in the winter… Tracing back the memories, I headed home. My step count managed to exceed 5,000.

昨年の12月29日から実家に帰省中です。

私は静岡県で生まれ育ちましたが、大学進学と同時に地元を離れました。その後は年に1～2回、夏休みや年末年始に帰ってくる程度です。帰省時はときどき家の周辺を散歩するのですが、家の周りも町全体もかなり風景が変わってしまい、何だか知らない場所に迷い込んだような気持ちになることもあります。

今日は夕方、母校の小学校の方へひとりで歩きに行ってみました。小学校時代は楽しかった思い出があります（私は小学校と大学が好きで、幼稚園と中学・高校が嫌いでしたw）。で、その楽しかった小学6年生の終わり頃、当時仲の良かった友達数人と、運動場の隅にタイムカプセルを埋めたんです。タイムカプセルに何を入れたのかはほとんど憶えていませんが、たぶん未来の自分に宛てた手紙とか、絵とか…。一緒に穴を掘り、タイムカプセルの瓶を埋めたメンバーが誰だったのかは憶えています。

しかし、その友達ともその後全く繋がりがなくなってしまったため、掘り出す機会もないまま約30年が経過。友達と埋めたものなので、私ひとりで掘り返すわけにもいかないし…。そういえば今どうなっているのかな、と思って今日運動場の近くまで行ってみて、驚きました。

いつの間にか小学校が建て替えられており、私たちがタイムカプセルを埋めた場所はコンクリートで固められていたのです。校舎が新しくなることはあっても、運動場の場所は変わることはないと思っていました。私たちのタイムカプセルはどうなったのでしょう。工事の過程で掘り出され、処分されたか、それともまだこのコンクリートの下で眠っているのか…。

いずれにしても、この先あのタイムカプセルを再び手にすることはないのでしょう。残念な気もするし、これで良かったのかもしれないなという思いもあります。

かろうじて見覚えのある遊具、冬に持久走大会で（いやいやながら）走った道…
思い出をなぞりつつ、家に帰りました。歩数は何とか5,000歩を越えました。
