Toad or Azuma Toad? / ヒキガエルか、アズマヒキガエルか？ - My Actifit Report Card: July 28 2025

It’s been relentlessly hot, with temperatures soaring past 35°C (95°F) every day. Walking on the asphalt feels like trudging across a sizzling frying pan. Still, I’ve managed to keep up with my daily walks.Since daytime is just too scorching, I often head out after sunset to stroll around the neighborhood.

Today, though, I decided to walk in the morning—a time I don’t usually venture out. Surprisingly, even in this heat, I saw people jogging… including some elderly folks, which made me a bit worried. Are they okay out here?

And then! I spotted a Toad by the roadside! I was concerned about it surviving this heat, but it was also the perfect blog material, so I crept closer to snap a photo. But it kept walking away.... This was the closest I could get for a shot.

When I got home and showed the picture to my eldest son, proudly saying,

“Look, I saw a Toad!”

he replied,

“That’s not a Toad—it’s an Azuma Toad, isn’t it?”

I blinked.

“An Azuma Toad? Isn’t that still a Toad?”

He shrugged and said,

“It’s a type of Toad, but it’s not great at jumping.”

“So it’s a Toad!!!! Toads don’t jump much anyway, do they?! ”

I shot back. Honestly, talking to my 12-year-old is like this all the time—it’s so frustrating! 😂😂😂

My elder son joined the school band this year, and with summer break in full swing, he’s at practice every day preparing for a competition. He’s gotten independent enough to head to morning radio calisthenics (a classic Japanese group exercise) with his younger brother, eat breakfast, and go to band practice without me nagging. It’s a relief, for sure.

But that snarky way he talks still gets under my skin. Like with the Toad and Azuma Toad thing—why do I have to get worked up over something so trivial? I’m hoping this is just a phase that’ll pass.

By the way, walking in the morning while the sun’s still high is brutal! I end up drenched in sweat, and instead of that refreshing post-exercise vibe, I feel like all my energy’s been wrung out of me.

Recently, my sons started playing Ring Fit Adventure on the Nintendo Switch. It’s a fun way to do cardio and strength training in the cool comfort of the house, so I’ve been thinking about giving it a try myself. The problem? I’m terrible at video games. Whenever I play, the kids stand behind me, yelling instructions and teasing me, which—yup, you guessed it—gets me annoyed all over again. I’m still debating what to do about that.

On the bright side, I hit over 6,600 steps today!

もうずっと、35℃を超える暑い日が続いています。アスファルトの道を歩くと、フライパンの上を移動しているのかと思うほど。それでも、ウォーキングはなんとか続いています。

日中は暑すぎるので、日が暮れてから外に出て近所を歩き回る日が多いのですが、今日は午前中に歩いてみました。普段、あまり出歩くことのない時間帯です。意外なことに、こんなに暑くてもジョギングをしている人が・・・しかも、高齢の方がいて心配になりました。大丈夫かな・・・

そして！今日は道端でヒキガエルを発見！この暑いのに大丈夫？と心配になりましたが、ブログの絶好のネタだったので写真を撮らせてもらおうと近づいてみました。すると、逃げるんですよね。一番近くてもこの距離でしか撮れませんでした。

帰って長男に「ヒキガエルいたよ」と言って写真を見せたところ、

「それ、ヒキガエルじゃなくてアズマヒキガエルじゃね？」

と言われました。

「アズマヒキガエルって、ヒキガエルじゃないの？」

と尋ねると、

「ヒキガエルの一種だけど、飛ぶ力はあまり強くない」

と言います。

「じゃあヒキガエルじゃん！ヒキガエルなんだから、飛ばないでしょ😤」

と言い返しました。12歳、万事がこの調子で話をしているとイライラします😂

長男は中学校で吹奏楽部に入部し、コンクールに向けて夏休みは毎日部活です。放っておいても朝は弟と一緒にラジオ体操に行き、朝ごはんを食べて、部活に行くのでだいぶ楽にはなりました。

ただ、話し方が突っかかってくる感じなのがどうも・・・上のヒキガエルの件みたいに、どうでもいいことで私も腹を立てなければなりません😭時期が過ぎれば落ち着くのでしょうか。

それにしても、まだ日が高い時間帯のウォーキングは暑い！歩いた後は汗びっしょりで、運動後の爽快感はなく、水分を搾り取られて消耗した感じになります。

最近息子たちは、Switchの「リングフィットアドベンチャー」を始めました。涼しい部屋で有酸素運動や筋トレができるので、私もやろうかな・・・とは思うのですが、私はゲームが下手すぎて、やっていると後ろから子ども達にやいのやいの言われてこれまた腹が立つのでどうしたものか考え中です。

歩数は6,600歩を超えました！
