We went to Ueno Zoo as a family, enjoying a pleasant autumn day filled with lots of walking.
The biggest charm of Ueno Zoo is undoubtedly its affordable admission fees. At just 600 yen for adults, it’s very reasonable, and children up to elementary school age get in free. Plus, for those living or studying in Tokyo, entry is free for kids up to junior high school—a truly generous pricing policy! With the summer heat subsiding and the weather perfect for a zoo visit, we decided to go at the request of my younger son.
We arrived a little after 10 a.m., but the ticket booth already had a long line. I was considering buying an annual pass, but the line we joined was for the ticket machines, so I couldn’t purchase one. Apparently, annual passes are only available at staffed counters.
Since it was a Sunday and the middle day of a long weekend, the zoo was incredibly crowded. Every animal enclosure was surrounded by throngs of people. The gorilla and polar bear areas were especially packed, and as someone who dislikes waiting in lines, I felt a bit exhausted.
I was really looking forward to seeing my favorite tapir, but unfortunately, it wasn’t visible from the fence. Many animals tend to go into nap mode when the sun is high, don’t they? I think visiting right at opening time in the morning might be a better plan next time.
I also love the rock ptarmigan (its boot-like feet are just too cute!), but when I went to see it, it was curled up in a corner against the wall, its face hidden. Its body was gently rising and falling, so it was probably sleeping. It was cute in its own way, but I really wanted to see its face… 😂Additionally, many areas of the zoo were under renovation, so it felt like there were fewer animals to see overall. Maybe it was a good thing we didn’t buy the annual pass this time.
I had hoped to see the lotus flowers at Shinobazu Pond during the summer, but we missed the season entirely. The pond was filled with large lotus leaves sticking up everywhere, which felt a bit eerie. After the zoo, we took a break at a Renoir café for some tea, then strolled around Ameyoko.
It had been a while since I last visited Ameyoko, but as always, it’s a unique and lively area. The open-front bars were packed with people drinking merrily, even in the middle of the day. I’ve lived in Tokyo for 20 years, but I’ve never once had a drink at Ameyoko.
Every time I try to shop there, I get overwhelmed by the crowds and the bustling atmosphere, and I end up leaving quickly. This time, too, I didn’t even manage to take a single photo.
When we got home and checked my step count, I was shocked to see I had walked 13,000 steps! That’s probably the most I’ve walked in a single day recently.
During the summer, I only went for quiet evening walks around the neighborhood, so this autumn, I want to get out more and explore various places while racking up those steps!

Fest
how expensive are the other zoos kyo O.o
Upon checking again, the 600 yen adult fee is pretty average.
It's rare to find zoo where kids up to junior high are free, so for a family of four, it’s quite a bargain.
o.o so then it's average :P. standard rate is alright. You have kids so it's good for you kyo. did you take them to disneyland
Hello @go-kyo, thank you for this tour of Ueno Zoo. I'm sorry you couldn't see all the animals and that some were sleeping or hiding.
I don't know if they were from Shinobazu Pond, but I do remember some of your photos with lotus flowers... so I'm satisfied with this tour, a great family day out, I guess.
Best regards.
I really want to see the lotus flowers at Shinobazu Pond next year! But summer is just too hot, isn’t it?😂
Ameyoko in Ueno is also an interesting spot I’d love to share on Hive, but it was so crowded that I ended up escaping in a hurry. I’ll give it another shot next time!
There's no need to worry. You already publish very interesting things.
Best regards from Europe.
