The best women's UFC fight ever happened yesterday

avatar

I don't think I am alone in stating the following opinion: Generally speaking, the women's fights in UFC tend to be much more exciting than a lot of the men's matchups. I'm not going to speculate as to why this is, it just happens to be the case.

This was extremely evident yesterday at UFC 248, where the matchup between Jedrzejczyk and Zhang was the best fight of the night and it was overall, one for the record-books and future hall of fame.

From the very first seconds of the fight, this thing turned out to be a slugfest of epic proportions. They weren't just swinging wildly either, there was a high level of precision in both of their strikes. The pace never seemed to let up and who had the upper hand changed several times throughout the fight. You would think that JJ had it in the bag one minute, only to have the momentum completely shifted in the next.

Zhang started to slow down her pace in the end of round 3 and there was speculation on the part of the announcers and most of the crowd where I was watching the event that she was gassing out as the champion had never seen the "championship rounds" of 4 and 5 in a professional fight. Then Weili found some stores of energy in backup because she simply brutalized JJ in round 4 and 5 and Jedrzejczyk's face looked like it could explode at any moment.

The fact that Joanna's forehead now extended further from her head than her nose does didn't slow her down, as she continued to fight for the belt all the way to the final horn. This short edit shows just a portion of the brutal hits that both women took throughout the 25 minutes.

This was definitely the best fight of the night and unlike many 5-round matches that I have seen, there was never a lull in the action. These two gave it their all and then at little bit more for the entire duration.

At the conclusion, JJ handled the split-decision defeat with a style of class that makes her impossible to not respect. She gave it her all and landed a tremendous amount of punches as well. In the end, the fact that Zhang has more power in her punches might have tipped the scale slightly in the champ's favor.

Fight of the year? I think it is a strong contender.

Both women gave their best and this epic fight will be remembered and talked about for decades to come. A job well done.

I'd give anything to be fit and these two are potraying beastly moves out here? Dang!

I am getting drawn to that world (UFC) since last year. This looks like something I would watch for hours.

it's pretty great! It is really the only sport I look forward to watching these days.

She lost with about as much style and grace that a person can. She will remain a big draw in the division but likely will not get another title shot unless someone else can strip Zhang.

This looks brutal. First proper womens fight I have seen where decent punches are landing. These girls are tough and can take a decent punch.

Yes that was truly a fight of epic proportions!
Neither fighter really slowed down and both gave it all they had.

Funniest moment for me was when Cormier was talking and said something like "Aww! she (Zhang) hit her on the bubble!"
Crazy great Fight.

When the main event rolled around... Like Rogan said... The crowd was spoiled.
That one was more of a chess match.

As far as the real "main event" was concerned, i don't think a single punch was thrown in the first 3 minutes. I don't know what sort of fighting sport that would be acceptable... I can't think of one.

I remember hearing the referee telling them "you are making championship fight money for this, how about earning some of it?" or something along those lines. Dana White was not pleased but as I think @cryptoandcoffee mentioned, it seems as though White is displeased about most things :P

In the grand scheme of things it is crazy to think just now new UFC still is. Then when you think about the fact that women have only been able to fight maybe half that time or less, it is even more impressive. I remember when they first started having fights for the women. It was a long time overdue. I agree, the fights in their division are often much more exciting than the mens. This sounds like it was a fantastic match. I was busy watching basketball all weekend :)

completely agree. I have watched this fight 2x already just trying to figure out how one of the judges gave the fight to JJ. Simply epic.

This was one of a few fights where I literally screamed out loud in front of the TV - Technically absolutely beautiful but still as rough as a fight can be.

Really had to laugh out loud when JR said in the post interview "Don't worry, you look great" - Man that forehead looked crazy :D

best fight I have seen in a while and I liked that there was a ton of mutual respect. Weili's post fight interview was a bit long and her translator getting caught up in the moment was a bit dumb (be professional dude, your team was heavily favored to win.)

JJ took the Frankenstein criticism very well but man than hematoma or whatever it is called was BAD

Yeah "I'm to excited.. sorry... sorry.." isn't really that professional..

She reminded me on the Alien from Alien vs. Predator tbh :D
