Tony Cairoli announced his retirement from motocross racing at the end of this season.

A few days ago I learned that one of the living legends of world motocross, known by its acronym MXGP, the Italian Antonio "Tony" Cairoli will say goodbye to his participation in this category with 36 years old and 98 world championships won, which can become 10 if he wins this year, he is currently third and would need a comeback but knowing Cairoli no goal is impossible. In the last race in Sardinia, his homeland, he had an accident and could not participate.

With a bit of luck I plan to go to see him in Villa La Angostura (Argentina) in November this year in one of the last races of the year, the antepenultimate to be exact.

18 years of career in the world motocross that have made him one of the two greatest riders of all time in this category next to the Belgian Stefan Everts who has indeed won 10 world titles.

Tony Cairoli's farewell to his fans

18 years of competition, a long career in motocross with 9 world titles won (six of them consecutively between 2009 and 2014), 270 Grand Prix raced, of which 93 won, 181 podiums.

Snatching the crown from Slovenian Tim Gajser who has a considerable lead won't be an easy task, but it doesn't keep Cairoli awake at night either. As he himself says: "I've never worried about statistics and winning the tenth title is not my obsession either. It's just getting harder and harder for me to compete. That's why I'm quitting."

His career in motocross started back in 2004. In Europe, very recently the Euro had been introduced as the official currency of the European Union and to move from one country to another passports and special permits were no longer needed.

In that first year in the so-called MX2, the name with which I got used to follow the races on TV before adopting in 2014 the pompous name of MXGP, perhaps when its organizers discovered that behind the category there was a huge business as there was behind the MotoGP, said in that first year came third, which boded well for the future of the sport.

Only one year later, in 2005, he won his first world title. The Sardinian was already showing all his talent. Which he repeated in 2007

In 208 he decides to make the big step. Leaving the MX2 category to move to MX1. The year before, the star of world motocross had retired: Stefan Everts, the Belgian 10 times world champion.

After a first year of apprenticeship (finishing sixth), the so-called "Cairoli era" begins. Six consecutive world titles from 2009 to 2014 inclusive).

Someone said sardonically that his only real rival, the only one who could beat him was Stefan Evert....and he did not race anymore.

He takes a trial period in 2015 with some technical drawbacks and some accidents to recover in 2016 with a second place in the World Championship of the category and win his ninth title a year later in 2017. He resists still in 2018 finishing second but 2019 marked the beginning of an announced end as a consequence of age. He does not give up and in 2021 closes third in the World Cup trying to say goodbye in 2021 in the best way.

In his farewell to the fans he tweets: "In his farewell to fans he tweets, "It can't always be in life Speed, Mud and Glory -non puó essere sempre nella vita Velocité, Fango e Gloria-...."

A motorcyclist who came from nothing, touring Italy and Europe with his father's old camper, sleeping on a mattress thrown on the kitchen floor. That's where he got the willpower and tenacity to keep going, even when conditions were adverse. Even knowing how to overcome many misfortunes.

He has won in circumstances that have made him a legend: with a broken hand in 2005, as a privateer - not official - Yamaha in 2009 and with a KTM that was starting to do things seriously in European endurance racing in 2010 and 2014.

Always with the same manager, almost a father and son relationship that has lasted for 18 years: Claudio De Carli.

But the most meritorious of his entire career is that he leaves at the peak of it when still on the threshold of the farewell he has the mathematical chances to win his title number 10,having the lucidity to understand that the right thing to do is to leave when he is at the top and not to fight for marginal positions that never belonged to him.
