Sainz with Ferrari wins a spectacular Grand Prix at Silverstone in a race marked by an impressive accident at the start.

The Silverstone circuit has two DRS zones (the FIA removed a third zone in 2019), to be activated 30 meters after Turn 5 and at Turn 14.

The British Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious in the entire Formula 1 calendar and Lewis Hamilton, ignoring the saying that no one is a prophet in his own land, is the most winning driver with eight victories. But besides that, he is the local driver who has won the most Grand Prix of his country, surpassing the record of Alain Prost himself, who won the French Grand Prix five times.

Together with the Italian Grand Prix, he holds the record of having always been a valid race for the Formula 1 World Championship in every season since the creation of Formula 1 in 1950. Not even the coronavirus pandemic that forced the cancellation of so many races was able to stop these two Grand Prix.

Of the last eight races, seven were won by Lewis Hamilton and the remaining one in 2018 by Sebastian Vettel when he raced for Ferrari.

Who act as local in this edition is the Mercedes duo, Norris with his McLaren, Williams and Aston Martin.

A Grand Prix won by Carlos Sainz Jr. who gets his first victory in the highest category of motorsport, confirming all the good things done during the weekend.

But also a race that almost did not end in tragedy from the very beginning.

To understand all this wonderful spectacle that, in short, is Formula 1, let's start from the very beginning of the weekend.

Distintos escenarios. / Different scenarios.

Since 1987, the British Grand Prix has been held uninterruptedly at the Silverstone circuit.

Silverstone is said to be the most "authentic" F1 circuit, where fans arrive in the early hours of the morning and stay in the stands cheering until the late hours of the night.

In the previous season, the Silverstone GP was something of a "hinge race", with the great duel between Verstappen and Hamilton. Where the absolute hegemony of the Dutchman until then began to be broken to start an interrupted "comeback" that led Hamilton to equal the score of the current champion in the penultimate race. The events of the last race that crowned the Red Bull driver as champion are still fresh in our memory, so I will not elaborate in further comments.

However, as much as we relate the British Grand Prix to Silverstone in the past, other venues also hosted this F1 event.

The first Grand Prix took place a quarter of a century before the maximum category of motor sports was officially born. In 1926 the first race was held at Brooklands in the county of Surrey and then moved to Donington. In the 1950s it alternated as the British F1 Grand Prix with the Aintree circuit near Liverpool and later with Brands Hatch in the county of Kent until 1986.

From 1987 it was officially declared the home of the British Grand Prix without interruption until today.

Only in 2003 it was at risk of being replaced by Donington Park, but then the financial difficulties of the latter to host it made the situation remain unchanged. 35 years running on the same circuit, a true record, a classic with an English flavor.

Pruebas libres. / Free practice.

FP1: under the rain and with few turns the best time is for Valtteri Bottas with Alfa Romeo. / FP2: Ferrari's Carlos Sainz announces to be in great shape and gets the best time. / FP3: everything is back to normal, the best time is for Max Verstappen with Red Bull.

As usual, the rain is the unexpected and decisive protagonist at Silverstone.

The first free practice (FP1) was quite chaotic and with very little time available for the drivers due to the rain. Followed by a surprising Lewis Hamilton. Perhaps to remind the F1 world that the seven grand prix won at this circuit have not been the result of chance. Even considering this present of low performances he is going through. Third was the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, who at this circuit seems to tilt the balance in his favor in the fight with Charles Leclerc to establish a leadership in the Prancing Horse, at least on the track.

The curious thing about the storms at Silverstone is that they are not only unexpected, but also alternate with periods (hours) of sunshine, clouds, asphalt that begins to dry and rain again.

The real free practice began with FP2, where almost all drivers mounted medium tires that would be -unless unforeseen- the ones that should support the heaviest weight of the race.

And again it is the Spanish Ferrari driver to set the best time with Lewis behind him. Followed by Lando Norris and a Verstappen who at this stage of testing does not seem to be at ease with the car. However, in the third and last free test session the current champion achieved the best time followed by Sergio Perez, his teammate.

The curious thing in this last free test session is that the two Mercedes managed to get in the middle, behind the two Red Bulls but ahead of the two Ferraris.

The analysis left by the three free test sessions is the different behavior of the cars according to the weather conditions and the asphalt of the circuit. Nothing seems to indicate a clear denominator.

Clasificación y parrilla de largada. / Qualifying and starting grid.

separador-parrafos-para-F1.png

Confirming all the good things he had done in the first two free practice sessions, Carlos Sainz achieved the best time obtaining the first pole position of his career in Formula 1 overtaking Max Verstappen in the last attempt.

Third Leclerc author of a spin on the last lap, followed by Sergio Perez. Hamilton and Russell finish in fifth and eighth places respectively, demonstrating once again the difficulties of Mercedes to qualify among the first. However, as the race progressed, they seem to have got quite close to the two leaders, Red Bull and Ferrari. And little by little Hamilton starts to regain the space he has within his own team, overtaking Russell once again, as a sign of a slight improvement for the British multi-champion.

Surprisingly, Latifi with his Williams manages to enter the Top Ten, as well as Guanyu Zhou with Alfa Romeo. Aston Martin continues with its black streak and Haas is back to the team we knew last year.

With the condition of rain we go to the race.

George Russell largaba octavo, Guanyu Zhou noveno inmediatamente detrás.

The impressive accident at the start of the Silverstone GP in F1. In the background, in the background and to the left of Verstappen's Red Bull is Russell's Mercedes out of control. While at the back of the line, Guanyu Zhou's Alfa Romeo car is seen spinning out and flying towards the crash barriers, which, in turn, allow us to appreciate the closeness of the public to the track.

Never before this year had the start of the race taken on such dramatic overtones as at the Silverstone Grand Prix.

As soon as the lights turned green, Verstappen overtook Sainz and Hamilton moved into third place. But at the end of the straight there is a tremendous accident.

George Russell (his first accident in Formula 1) lost control of his Mercedes and rammed the Alfa Romeo of Guanyu Zhou, which was catapulted straight ahead and crashed into the protective fences near the crowd, avoiding a tragedy. Once again the halo saved the life of a driver in F1. Yuki Tsunoda, with Alpha Tauri, was saved by a miracle and Esteban Ocon only broke a tire, which is why they will be able to take part in the restart of the race.

In a gesture of infinite human greatness, the Mercedes driver rushed out of his car to check the physical condition of the Chinese driver, who was immediately taken to the Silverstone medical center, apparently out of danger.

George Russell started eighth, Guanyu Zhou ninth immediately behind. Lewis Hamilton had gained two positions, while Charles Leclerc had lost one and Sergio Perez.

Red flags, suspension of the race and the cars back to the pits to clean the track.

At the restart the race was obviously missing Guanyu Zhou, Russell and Albon, the Williams driver also involved in the accident when he was touched from behind by Sebastian Vettel's Aston Martin.

As the entry of the safety car was not verified, since the race was immediately suspended before entering any sector, the Silverstone Grand Prix restarts from the original positions at the time of the start and not as the positions were at the time of the accident.

Reanudación de la carrera. / Resumption of the race.

separador-parrafos-para-F1.png

The cars lined up for the pit lane from where they will make a new start.

Most of the teams have decided to change to medium tyres, except for the two Alpha Tauri, Latifi and Sebastian Vettel.

Again, there was a touching at the start. Sainz holds off the onslaught of Verstappen and Leclerc touches the two Red Bulls, fortunately without consequences. Once again, another problematic start in this opening sector. This time Hamilton, instead of gaining positions, has lost one to Lando Norris. On lap five the DRS is enabled and the Red Bull of Sergio Perez starts to lose positions, apparently with low engine power.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, who knows the circuit by heart, overtakes Lando Norris and moves up to fourth behind Leclerc's Ferrari. Sergio "Checo" Perez, meanwhile, dropped to the back of the field and pitted to change the front wing allegedly damaged in his touch with Leclerc.

And on lap 12 the first big surprise: puncture for Max Verstappen and the Silverstone Grand Prix is in the hands of the two Ferraris and a Lewis Hamilton who seems to have regained his best form having recorded the fastest lap time so far. Verstappen, with a little bit of luck, suffered a puncture near the pits and came in sixth. But on re-entering the track he complains of reliability issues and laps a second down on the leaders. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton starts to set record after record, making the English crowd at Silverstone delirious. Hamilton seems to be back to his best at his favourite circuit. An unknown Verstappen is lapping two seconds slower than the top three.

With Hamilton's imminent attack, who is setting lap records, the Ferrari team sends Carlos Sainz into the pits to change tyres. Leclerc now leads the race, but with Hamilton taking half a second per lap from him until he is within DRS range.

Sergio Perez begins to recover positions until he is behind his teammate Verstappen who returns to pit, put hard tyres and wait until the end of the race that some circumstance favours him and allows him to overtake some position. He drops to eighth position when he returns to the track. Still without changing tyres, Leclerc and especially Hamilton are lapping with better lap times than the rest.

On lap 26, Leclerc comes into the pits to change tyres and the Silverstone grandstands explode: Lewis Hamilton is the race leader, although he also has to pit for hard tyres. The advantage is that he will have fresher tyres than the rest for the end of the race. For the first time since the penultimate lap in last year's final race in Abu Dhabi where he lost the world title, Hamilton leads an F1 race.

On lap 32 Mercedes decide to bring in Hamilton, who will be looking to make a comeback in the final 18 laps that could take him to his first win of the season. He returns to the track behind the two Ferraris, four and five seconds behind the two leaders. Anything is possible, although the pit stop was quite slow. This time it was the team to fail. And he starts to set the best lap times right away. The question is whether the time will be enough for him. In the meantime, it's amazing what's happening with Verstappen's Red Bull, now eighth.

Crucial moment of the race: safety car on track because Ocon, who had overtaken Verstappen, stalls on the track. Hamilton and Sainz come back into the pits and change tyres to take advantage of the neutralisation of the race. Both are on soft tyres. Leclerc continues. And the scene shocks continue at Silverstone. A Grand Prix with the unknown of the result until the end. Pure spectacle in the last ten laps with Leclerc-Sainz-Hamilton-Perez who are playing for the win. And Verstappen, the main favourite at the start, watching from ninth position on soft tyres.

Sainz surprises Leclerc and Pérez surprises Hamilton at the restart first and Leclerc one lap later. Incredible start from the Mexican who had been last at the start of the race. Epic battle for third place between Leclerc and Hamilton which finally goes to the Briton. Sainz escapes and Perez consolidates second.

This time Ferrari's Spaniard made no mistakes, taking his first win and becoming only the second Ferrari driver to do so in F1, allowing the positions in both world championships to begin to realign. With neither Verstappen nor Leclerc winning, the others (Perez, Sainz and even Hamilton) have recovered some points that we will see if they have been of any use at the end of the season.

Lewis Hamilton, who until the arrival of the safety car seemed to be able to fight for the victory, had to settle for the last step of the podium and the extra point for the fastest lap. Fernando Alonso had a good race and for the first time, both Haas were in the points for the first time. So did Sebastian Vettel with Aston Martin and Lando Norris with McLaren. As has been the case in recent times, the entry of the safety car was decisive and numerous accidents are occurring in this season 2022. Placing the first corner at a short distance from the start is causing more and more risks and the FIA should take action.

Max Verstappen continues to comfortably lead the F1 Drivers' World Championship. Sergio Pérez consolidates his position as his runner-up.Tampoco en el Mundial de Constructores las posiciones han sufrido demasiados cambios. Ferrari se aleja de Mercedes / In the Constructors' World Championship, too, the positions have not changed much. Ferrari pulls away from Mercedes

Red Bull continues to lead in both championships, although the gap is narrowing. Sergio Pérez's comeback at Silverstone has contributed a lot to this.

Verstappen's debacle may have had something to do with the touch on the second start with Leclerc, although he was never competitive as the race unfolded.

Ferrari are as strong as Red Bull, but they must be mindful of the fragility of their unit power and in the second half of the season manage the full power of their engine carefully.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes seem to have made up ground, although the gap to Verstappen still seems unreachable.

But as we know in F1, the last word is never said. The Silverstone GP was a case in point.
