[ESP/ENG] Leyendas del Rally Mundial: Colin McRae, el primer británico campeón del mundo de rally. / World Rally Legends: Colin McRae, the first British world rally champion.

Colin McRae es uno de los pilotos más admirados en la historia de los rallies a pesar de haber ganado un solo título mundial. / Colin McRae is one of the most admired drivers in rally history despite having won only one world title.

Hoy comienzo a incursionar, amigos del deporte motor y de @fulldeportes, en una nueva categoría: el Rally.

Ha habido a través de décadas pilotos que han incursionado sólo en esta categoría. Por su amor al peligro innato en el deporte motor pero también mezclado a un deseo de aventura que los lleva a recorrer centenares o miles de kilómetros en cada prueba.

Probablemente de todos el más conocido y esponsorizado es el Rally Paris-Dakar (acortado ya que ahora se llama Rally Dakar) y se corrió en su trazado original hasta el 2008, en territorio sudamericano desde el 2009 y hasta el 2019. Desde el año 2020 se corre en Arabia Saudita.

Un Rally muy particular, de tipo integral, abierto a autos, camiones, motos, cuatriciclos y últimamente los llamados SxS Side by Side o UTV (Utility Task Vehicle).

Una competencia que se caracteriza por la resistencia física (un clásico ver correr los vehículos en medio a las dunas) pero también por su extrema peligrosidad.

26 participantes han perdido la vida en accidentes de todo tipo durante la disputa de este Rally en los últimas cuatro décadas.

Pero en realidad quiero comenzar a hablarles del otro Rally, el tradicional reservado a autos aunque de distintas categorías y de acuerdo a su cilindrada. En la actualidad estas categorías están divididas en grupos que son: A-B-N-R Super 2000 y kit car.

Las carreras más espectaculares de Rally europeas son las que se desarrolan en Escandinavia (Noruega, Suecia y Finlandia) de donde salen generalmente los mejores pilotos.

Porque se corren muchas veces no en circuitos asfaltados como la F1 sino en rutas provinciales cubiertas de nieve y de hielo por lo cuál la pericia de los pilotos en las maniobras es providencial.

Y en homenaje a todos esos pilotos que deben tener una excelente calidad conductiva para poder sobresalir, es que inicio esta columna llamada: Leyendas del Rally Mundial.

Y del primero que me quiero ocupar (no se si el mejor pero si uno de los que conservo los mejores recuerdos) es el escocés Colin McRae.

La palabra Rally ha sido asociada por años a la disputa del legendario Paris Dakar (ahora Rally Dakar) y a las dunas de arena del Sahara. / The word Rally has been associated for years with the legendary Paris Dakar (now Dakar Rally) and the sand dunes of the Sahara.

Today I begin to venture, friends of motorsport and @fulldeportes, in a new category: the Rally.

Uno de los tantos accidentes de Colin McRae, felizmente sin consecuencias personales. / One of Colin McRae's many accidents, fortunately without personal consequences.

Podríamos definir a Colin McRae como el piloto de rallies por excelencia a nivel mundial, así como lo fue el argentino Jorge Recalde a nivel local y regional.

Fue uno de los pilotos que escribió las póginas más bellas rel rally europeo y mundial en los años 90.

Fue en su país natal en el Campeonato Nacional de Rally de Escocia donde dió sus primeros pasos como piloto y donde comenzó a trascender a nivel europeo. Los especialistas es seguida lo compararon con otros "monstruo sagrado" del rally mundial: el finalndés Ari Vatanen, por el cuúl el mismo McRae sentía una profunda admiración.

Con apenas 19 años (había nacido el 15 de septiembre de 2007) debuta en el Rally de Suecia acompañado por Vauxhall en el WRC con un Ford Sierra. El coloso estadounidense comenzaba a incursionar en esta categoría y el resultado no fue de los mejores. En su presentación terminó en la posición 15°

Sin embargo un año más tarde prueba de nuevo fortuna con el mismo y en el Rally de Nueva Zelanda, con 20 años cumplidos, termina en el quinto lugar. Comenzaba a vislumbrarse una nueva estrella en el firmamento del rally mundial.

We could define Colin McRae as the rally driver par excellence at world level, as was the Argentinean Jorge Recalde at local and regional level.

He was one of the drivers who wrote the most beautiful pages of European and world rally in the 90s.

It was in his native country in the Scottish National Rally Championship where he took his first steps as a driver and where he began to transcend at European level. Specialists often compared him to another "sacred monster" of the world rally: the Finnish Ari Vatanen, for whom McRae himself felt a deep admiration.

At just 19 years of age (he was born on September 15, 2007) he made his debut in the Rally of Sweden accompanied by Vauxhall in the WRC with a Ford Sierra. The American colossus was just starting to venture into this category and the result was not the best. In his debut, he finished 15th.

However, a year later he tried his luck again with the same car and in the New Zealand Rally, at the age of 20, he finished in fifth place. A new star was beginning to appear in the world rally firmament.

Hasta que en 1991 hace el salto de calidad. En esa época la potencia ganadora de los rally tenía un nombre: Subaru. La marca japonesa era imbatible y lo gisuió siendo por años.

Decide comenzar con la nueva marca en el campeonato británico llamado Prodrive Subaru que gana en 1991 y 1992.
El primer título mundial de Rally para Colin McRae estaba al caer y lo ganó en Nueva Zelanda al volante de un Subaru Legacy.

En ese momento Subaru cambia modelo y lanza el Impreza. Tremenda máquina de rally. Potencia y velocidad al servicio de la resistencia. Con el Subaru Impreza ganó dos rally más (Nueva Zelanda y el del RAC al año siguiente), y otros dos en el año 1995, en que se proclamó campeón del mundo.

De ahí en más comienza una verdadera lucha entre dos gigantes: Colin McRae y Tommi Mäkinen quien gana por muy poco los mundiales de 1996 y 1997.

A pesar de su guia espectacular a veces estuvo acompañado por la mala suerte y perdió campeonatos por muy poco. Comienza a sufrir varios abandonos y decide dejar Subaru para volver a Ford que había comenzado a mejorar notablemente sus autos. esta vez con un Focus.

Entre 2000 y 2002 estableció un récord fenomenal de 23 victorias que, sin embargo, no le permitieron ganar el título que cayó en las manos de Carlos Sainz y Sébastien Loeb.

En este perído registró un espantoso accidente que podría haberle costado la vida. En el Tour de Corse, en la etapa especial de velocidad, llegó demasiado rápido a una curva cayendo a un barrancoa una velocidad cercana a los 200 kms por hora.

Con el auto perdiendo carburante quedó atrapado en la cabina d epilotaje por casi una hora con el riesgo que el auto se preniera fuego y muriera carbonizado.

Cuando lograron sacarlo del auto tenía roto solo el pómulo izquierdo.

La imagen de un piloto ganador que fue siempre sinónimo y garantía de espectáculo en el Rally Mundial. / The image of a winning driver who was always synonymous with and a guarantee of spectacle in the World Rally.

En el 2003 cambia nuevamente de auto y pasa a Citroën siendo su mejor resultado un segundo puesto en el Rally de Montecarlo. Una temporada muy pobre a la que le puso fin intentando guiar otro auto, en este caso un Škoda Fabia que tampoco le trajo satisfacciones en los dos añs siguientes.

En 2006 vuelve a Citroen conduciendo un Xsara WRC y su estrella comenzaba ya a pagarse.

Había disputado 1465 rallies ganando en 25 de ellos cuando el 15 de septiembre de 2007 piloteando un helicóptero éste se estrelló al suelo tras chocar con las copas de unos árboles y fue inmediatamente consumido por el fuego.

Desaparecía a los 38 años uno de los pilotos más queridos y emblemáticos del Rally mundial. Uno que nunca se rendía y daba el máximo en cada carrera.

Una de sus frases lo pinta de cuerpo entero:

"Nunca me fijé objetivos, sólo quería ser lo más rápido posible y ganar lo máximo posible. No miré al pasado, no miré la historia, no miré cuántos rallies habían ganado otros pilotos, sólo fui y gané todos los rallies que pude".

Dar el máximo desde el inicio fue siempre la norma para competir en Colin McRae. / Giving the maximum from the start was always the standard for competing in Colin McRae.

In 2003 he changed cars again and moved to Citroën, his best result being a second place in the Montecarlo Rally. A very poor season to which he put an end trying to guide another car, in this case a Škoda Fabia that did not bring him satisfaction in the following two years.

In 2006 he returned to Citroen driving an Xsara WRC and his star was already beginning to be paid.

He had disputed 1465 rallies winning in 25 of them when on September 15, 2007 piloting a helicopter crashed to the ground after hitting the treetops and was immediately consumed by fire.

One of the most beloved and emblematic pilots of the world Rally was gone at the age of 38. One who never gave up and gave his best in every race.
