The first official Formula 1 tests in Shakir and the significance of the results.
With each passing season, motorsport's top class becomes more enigmatic. The teams are so afraid of their rivals discovering their secrets that they hide their true potential as much as possible until the very moment when they have to show it. That is, the qualifying rounds and the races themselves.
The official presentations of this year's F1 cars were more an element for the use and consumption of social networks than a real event in which the cars presented would make us guess, in broad strokes, what their definitive physiognomy would be, in a year in which by all means at its disposal the FIA promoted a "real revolution in Formula 1 for the 2022 season". Not only in aerodynamic matters.
The first unofficial test sessions at Montmeló continued to show cars with few changes, many similar ones and big problems with the "jumping" or purpoising that these changes had caused in the running of the different cars, without exception.
When it seemed that the official tests at the Shakir circuit would show the real performance, the first surprises appeared, because each team planned to test aspects of the car that their rivals ignored and, therefore, the times ended up not being compatible, let alone comparable.
Because it is not the same to drive hundreds of kilometres with soft, super-soft, medium or hard tyres. Some think about the development of the race and others think, on the other hand, about how to show themselves to the mass media by obtaining good lap times, even if in reality they have little to do with the normal development of a race.
So we find that the Haas team, whose continuity as such was in doubt until the last months of the previous season, which officially presented two drivers, made them participate in the tests in Barcelona and then dismissed one of them (the Russian Nikita Mazepin) and lost the sponsorship of Uralkali, obtained the best time on the second day of testing in Shakir, in the agreed extra time (one hour because they arrived late with the excuse of presenting their new driver Magnnussen). And Schumacher on the last day of testing (the third) gets the second fastest time behind Max Verstappen, leaving all the rest behind.
How much logic is there in these results and how should they be read? Or rather how should they be interpreted?
Is it possible that Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren - I am not quoting Red Bull because Verstappen had the fastest time at the end - were not concerned with the times but with the performance of the cars during the race?
What is the meaning of Hamilton's words when he admits at the close of the Shakir test that if the race were the following day, a Ferrari or Red Bull double would be the most likely scenario?
How much truth and how much stratagem is there in these statements? Hamilton finished in 17th place whereas in Montmeló he had led the standings by more than half a second over the rest?
Where does truth begin and simulation end?
Primer día de test: Alpha Tauri obtiene el mejor tiempo con Gasly./ Test Day 1: Alpha Tauri sets the fastest time with Gasly.
The first day of official testing in the new Formula 1 season at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain got off to an auspicious start for Red Bull's satellite team.
Indeed, Pierre Gasly's Alpha Tauri (ex-Toro Rosso) set the fastest time, clocking 1'33''902 during the 103 laps in total that saw the French driver on track on the white tyres, something the leading teams with title ambitions did not do.
The closest to the French driver were the Ferraris, albeit some way off in the times they turned on the medium tyres, with excellent results obviously looking more at race development than qualifying.
Carlos Sainz placed second at 457 thousandths, while Charles Leclerc was third at 629 thousandths Gasly, excellent times considering the difference in tyres.
In the remaining positions were alternating drivers and teams with fewer laps that made various experiments on the track, even Mercedes and Red Bull made various tests without aiming at the times so that the best was the tenth place shown by Sergio Perez.
On this first day of qualifying and as anticipated, Haas introduced Pietro Fittipaldi as test driver accompanying Mick Schumacher confirmed driver of the American team, now without Mazepin and the financial support of Uralkali.
Segundo día de test: Haas y Magnussen dan la sorpresa./ Test Day 2: Haas and Magnussen spring a surprise.
If we were complaining about the monotony and the lack of certainties, haas came to our aid and created a truly incredible situation.
For logistical reasons, the Haas team arrived in Bahrain for pre-season testing late and with a new driver appointed at the last minute, Denmark's Kevin Magnussen.
For this reason, he was given an extra hour to test. And what was the general surprise when Magnussen, in the first extra hour allowed, managed a better time than Carlos Sainz with Ferrari already in the morning and had not asked to be beaten by anyone in the afternoon.
Supposedly the lower temperature was the determining factor but considering all the problems Haas was going through it seems more of a miracle than anything else.
With C5 tyres, he set the best time of the second day of testing with a 1:33.207, astonishing everyone involved, drivers, team bosses, journalists and mass media in general.
Three tenths behind Sainz and eight tenths behind Verstappen, albeit with different compounds, completed the podium of this second day to the general astonishment.
Not far behind Verstappen, Hamilton was one tenth of a second behind the Dutchman, but almost a second behind the surprising driver Kevin Magnussen.
Tercer día de test: el campeón mundial dice presente./ Test Day 3: the world champion is present.
As a good champion, Max Verstappen closed the final day of testing at Bahrain's Sakhir circuit with the fastest time of the day with an excellent 1:31.973, proving that his Red Bull is still up to the big companies in the current sporting situation that is still smiling on him. He was even fastest on the C5 tyre with a 1:31.720, the softest tyre available and the one most teams are likely to use in qualifying from next weekend onwards.
Haas has ceased to be a surprise and transformed into a reality quite different from last year and has transformed the miracle Forrest Gump style in another magnificent time that has allowed Mick Schumacher to close the day with the second fastest time with 1:32.241 although half a second behind the Dutchman but showing a reality that not even the most optimistic would have dared to dream.
He even beat Ferrari's Leclerc, who clocked 1:32.420. The Ferraris have a good race pace and despite not recording excellent times for qualifying tests have shown that they are, along with Red Bull, the ones who have adapted the most to the famous "purpoising" effect that is giving so many headaches to Mercedes and McLaren, for example.
Alfa Romeo didn't do too badly either and together with Haas they could start to fight for points at the bottom of the standings, both in terms of drivers and teams.
Mercedes is a real mystery. Russel was fifth, one second behind Verstappen and Hamilton penultimate, who rather than thinking about the times did several simulations trying to check the famous "purpoising" effect.
Single-seater jumps seem to be the order of the day at the start of the 2022 F1 season and on the agenda of all the teams.
