Ghost Apples: A Mysterious Scene of Nature

If you see some strange apples hanging on a tree branch one winter morning, which are covered with a transparent ice shell, but hollow inside, then you are seeing Ghost Apples, which are called Bhoot-Apel in Bengali. This mysterious scene is an amazing gift of nature, which is real.

How are Ghost Apples made? You may wonder, how are these apples created? Actually, there is a strange game of nature behind it. A rotting apple sticks to the tree branch on a winter day. When a sudden snowfall (Freezing Rain) starts, the droplets of that icy water freeze around the apple, forming a transparent ice shell. Then, the inside of the apple rots and melts—even falls off. But the ice shell hangs on the tree, and there is no apple in this empty shell! It is a strange scene—as if a ghost has left it behind.
