Good News bears Fans, They Won't be Going 0-17!
I have written quite a bit about how annoyed I have been as a Chicago sports fan. It was really nice to have something to be happy about today. The Bears rolled to a 31 to 14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
I swear I'm going to be positive in this post, but I'd be too much of a homer if I didn't qualify and temper my excitement a little with the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are hot garbage... and I couldn't be happier. Their owner/General manager Jerry Jones is one of my least favorite people in all of sports. He just reeks of a billionaire who surrounds himself with yes men sycophants who convince him he is the smartest man in any room. It is true that Jones was smart enough to exploit the oil crisis in the 1970s to build his empire on the backs of American drivers, but that doesn't mean that he is "football" smart. He once again proved that by letting the best defensive player in football walk away from the team because Jones couldn't swallow his pride. Anyway, I love that the Cowboys are a laughing stock and the Bears were able to play them this week.
For once, it was the Bears getting to beat on a very weak opponent in order to hopefully build some momentum instead of being the team that good teams sharpen their metal on. Facing the Micah Parsonless Dallas Cowboys "defense" is exactly what the bears offense needed in order to experience some success, actually get to run their full playbook, and hopefully build some momentum. Thanks to the Cowboys ineptness, the Bears got to finally practice what their coach Ben Johnson has been preaching.
Although it is true the Bears defense looked really bad in the first half, they improved dramatically after the Cowboys inexplicably decided to abandon a running game that was averaging 6 yards per carry. Once the Bears took a 17 point lead, the defense got to focus on pressuring Dak Prescott... and they did. They actually sacked him twice and pressured him at least 6 other times. It was nice to see that it actually is possible when the Bears offense gets them a lead like they should.
But today was all about the offense. At first it was about huge plays that picked up big chunks of yards. We even got to see one of the trick plays that Ben Johnson is famous for when the Bears ran a really cool delayed flea flicker that resulted in a 65 yard touchdown pass. And what a pass it was! Due to the delayed nature of the play combined with a really bad toss back to QB Caleb Williams, Williams only had a split second to spot his receiver and to fire a dart over 50 yard in the air to Luther Burden III. It was an amazing play that Bears fans are not accustomed to seeing.
Once those deep passes loosened up the Cowboys "defense", the Bears showed they can actually run the ball especially when they include a little misdirection. They actually looked like a fully functional offense for the first time this year. Williams finished with 298 yards and 4 touchdowns. Even more impressive was the fact that he attempted many long passes and did not throw a single interception and was not sacked a single time. Again, the Cowboys are freaking terrible but you can only play who is in front of you and Williams definitely needed the practice.
Although it won't be shown on ESPN's top ten plays of the day, one of the most impressive things about this game was the Bears downfield blocking. Early in training camp, Coach Johnson stressed "No block, no rock" which means if wide receivers want to have plays run for them, they better be blocking down field. They did that all day today which lead to some great run after catch yardage. Hopefully it showed them that good things happen when you do the little things right.
Bear down Chicago Bears!
Of course, my friend, the more they work and adapt their pieces, the victories will come. Perhaps they didn't look good in the first two weeks. Also, I think this victory has a special meaning because it's against the Dallas Cowboys, a team whose owner you don't like. Without a doubt, this team, and especially Caleb Williams, has the potential to finish with a record above .500, and why not think about the postseason?
"I'm absolutely loving the way the Bears' offense is clicking right now! Caleb Williams is on fire, and the downfield blocking is making all the difference. The trick play was the icing on the cake - that delayed flea flicker was pure genius. I'm excited to see how they'll build on this momentum going forward."
It was a special moment for the Bears fans to finally see a win. Despite the weak opposition, I think the biggest achievement was Caleb Williams regaining his confidence and seeing the full potential of the offense. I hope he continues to do so against strong teams.
Wow beautiful performance I really enjoy it keep doing the good work more grace more wisdom amazing very interesting 💥💯, ♥️🎉🎉
I'm still trying to figure out if the Bears played really well or if the Cowboys just played really bad. I'm not crying either way, I hate the Cowboys. America's team my @#$!@#$...
I agree with your assessment of Jerry Jones.
How many total turnovers did the force? Hopefully it wasn't just a flash in the pan.
It was a little of both but no doubt the terrible cowboy defense sure helped.
For sure!
After a somewhat shaky start to the season with two losses, they've managed to get a win, which could be the start of something good, as they're gaining confidence for a winning streak. I also think it tastes even better because they beat a team whose owner, like Dallas, doesn't like
