NFL Day 2: Reactions and Predictions

So as predicted, my beloved Bears did not disappoint me. Although some of my fellow fans are upset the Bears did not trade up to get RB Ashton Jeanty, I'm actually quite happy they kept their two second round picks. There are other difference making running backs still on the board and they still need defensive line and offensive line help. I'm looking at this draft as a total package, not just 1 pick. If they can come out of the first 2 rounds with 3 starters, I will be VERY happy.

Although I did not specifically mention Colston Loveland yesterday, I am very happy with the pick. After OT and DT, TE was a need. The new Bears coach, Ben Johnson, loves to use a 2 TE set. In fact, he used it nearly 33% of the time last year in Detroit. Until last night the Bears only had 1 NFL quality TE on their roster: Cole Kmet. Although I like Kmet, as far as I know, he does not have a super power that allows him to be 2 people at once. So the Bears picked an instant starter. That is a win. Add the fact that many people had Loveland ranked as the 5th best player in the draft and you have a huge win. Although some liked Warren more (including myself) it makes sense that Johnson wanted Loveland. He is an elite route runner and pass catcher. He's going to create mismatches and make defenses have to make some tough choices.

After free agency and 1 draft pick, the Bears have 6 new starters who can all be difference-makers. Every one of those players is an upgrade over what they had last year. Considering half of those are on the offensive line (which was horrendous last year) I am very excited for the upcoming season.

The Bears still have some needs. Luckily they have the 7th, 9th, and 40th picks tonight to address those needs.

Out of those picks, I hope they are able to get a Left Tackle, Defensive Tackle or EDGE, and a Running Back.

I especially hope the Bears are able to land TreVeyon Henderson from Ohio State. He is a lightning fast RB who LOVES to block in the passing game. The Bears coach places a premium on blocking as evidenced by his mantra "No block... no rock". I think Henderson wold pair well with with their current running back Swift.

After that, I have heard very good things about EDGE Donovan Ezeiruaku. (His name is also excellent if you get stuck with a lot of vowels in Scrabble). The only problem is that it seems there aren't any more highly rated Left Tackles left. Perhaps the Bears can find a way to move up in the 3rd round to grab LT Aireontae Ersery from Minnesota. Either that or perhaps they can trade down from the 41st pick to grab an extra pick and take him late in the 2nd round.

No mater what, I'm just happy not to be desperate. I'm even more happy to be able to trust the Bears' front office. They have done everything right this off-season. Hopefully they can keep that going tonight.

How did your team do last night? Do you have any predictions for tonight? Where do you think Sanders will go?
