Should Pete Rose Be Eligible For The MLB Hall Of Fame?
Sports are awesome! It may be the only topic where two friends could have a screaming match about their differing opinions and then the next second they are laughing and talking about something else. That is because there is no real consequence about being right or wrong about sports... unless you are adamantly telling someone who to bet on. But then that crosses from sports to money... and arguments over that are never good. So in the grand scheme of things, whether Pete Rose is eligible for the MLB Hall of Fame or not is completely inconsequential... and incredibly fun to argue about! For those of you unaware, Pete Rose was kicked out of Major League Baseball for breaking the most sacred rule in professional sports: betting on a game in which you are involved. This week, he was posthumously reinstated.
I don't really even like baseball any more. The combination of being a White Sox fan (the worst franchise in professional sports) and the game being destroyed by instant replay, all or nothing swinging, and artificial rules to speed up the game. But those are arguments for a different day. Right now I'd like to flex my credentials (which are none) to adjudicate the case against Pete Rose. Actually, that is a lie. I'm really only going to look at one argument justifying his reinstatement.
First we need to get on the same page. If you are a person who says, "Pete Rose is going into the Hall of Fame as the all time hits leader and baseball player, who cares what he did as a manager?" Then the argument isn't any fun. That's pretty black and white and is just based on preference. I can argue that you should hold him accountable for his actions as a manager, but ultimately, you can just say "I don't wanna". Cool.
So this is for the person who says, "Yeah he bet on games he was managing, but he only bet on his team, the Reds, to win. That is a victimless crime. Of course he wanted to bet on his team to win. Who cares? he's just getting a little extra bonus for his team winning."
I might actually consider that argument if Rose had bet on his team to win EVERY SINGLE GAME. But he didn't. He only bet on his team to win sometimes. That means every game he did not bet on, he thought he was going to lose. Would that impact his managing? Humans like to prove themselves right. Did he ever manage in a way that would confirm his bias rather than do everything in his power to help the team win? Maybe or maybe not.
But here's the much bigger factor. How did his bets impact his managing? Let's say he bet on his team to win the first game of a 3 game weekend series. During that Friday night game, were his managerial decisions influenced by doing what is best for the team or himself? Did he use a pitcher who needed rest because he desperately wanted to win his bet? Did he use a pitcher he was planning to use in the next game to win his bet? Did he pinch hit a player who was supposed to be resting? In other words, did he make decisions in the game he bet on that impacted the next game or games? Unless you can say with absolute certainty that never happened, then you simply cannot reinstate Pete Rose. The anti-gambling rule is sacred for a reason. There is honestly nothing more damaging to a sport than creating doubt as to whether or not it is on the up and up. (If you want proof just look at the reaction to this year's draft lottery... and that isn't even a game).
With the amount of money players make, fines and suspensions will not deter players from gambling on their sport. The only real protection the league has is a player's desire to preserve their legacy. If they don't have to worry about that, then you are begging for a gambling scandal.
Pete Rose was an incredible player. He was so exciting to watch and did it for an incredibly long time. His records and statistics are unblemished, but sadly, the only way to truly prevent this from happening again is to ensure his legacy is tarnished by his choice to break the one unbreakable rule in sports.
What do you think? Should Pete Rose be reinstated?
Yes, I think he should be reinstated.
Two, I think gambling on a game should be allowed for players, coaches, managers and all personnel involved with that team. One of my caveats is that this is done via a blockchain so that we know their verified wallet. I imagine sports betting companies would love this as they are already paying athletes to promote their product and services.
My reasoning is that radical transparency will always trump radical privacy when it comes to truth and honesty. This works for crypto and I believe it can for sports gambling as well. Money amplifies the character of a person. The game theory implications of this could be fun.
Third, Pete Rose apologized. In my life, I forgive someone who said they are sorry. Do I allow them into my life at a deeper level than they were before? That depends on the person and the situation. In Pete’s case he went the rest of his earthly life without being honored for the hall of fame. A posthumous induction to the hall of fame makes sense in the current spirit of the game.
This would be tough in practice. First you'd have to make sure any player or manager who places a bet only uses a platform that is transparent. Right now that doesn't exist. Second, they would literally have to bet on their team to win every single game they play in. If they only bet some of the time, it is going to create some huge conflicts where they might not try as hard or make different decisions based on whether or not they bet. Now if you really want to extend this out, I do wonder if a smaller league would allow teams to make money based on their wins and losses. Although not technically gambling, it would kind of like they are betting on themselves to win. Win more games = make more money.
he could be

I've been banging on this drum for a long time. I think he should definitely be in the hall of fame and my main argument for it actually has nothing to do with Pete Rose or betting at all.
A-Rod
That's my argument. The guy got caught using performance enhancing drugs, got caught lying about using performance enhancing drugs, and he is still eligible for the hall of fame. Sure, he hasn't gotten the votes needed yet, but if people have zero problem with Aaron Rodriguez being in the hall of fame, they need to put on their big boy pants and give Pete Rose the credit he is due.
In fact, I think A-Rod's stuff was more egregious because he did it while he was a player. I don't even care if you put Pete is as a player but not as a manager and put an asterix by his name, he still deserves to be in there.
Especially in a day and age where online sports betting is such a huge industry. There is zero chance players aren't doing the same thing every second of the day in 2025.

I think the big problem is betting on a game in which they can decide the outcome. Because if they are allowed to bet... they are also allowed to bet on themselves to lose. I can't think of anything more problematic than that. As far as your Alex Rodriguez argument, you are preaching to the choir. But I go the opposite way. I don't think he, Bonds, Giambi, Palmiero, etc. should be eligible at all. They already stole glory from players like Frank Thomas who was adamantly against steroids and actually tried to start a coups to force for the testing of steroids. I'd argue they also stole money from non-cheaters by signing huge contracts while there was less for honest players.
What about McGwire? You can't tell me he didn't juice. I have his old card from when he was on the As I think it was and he was so tiny! Hard to believe he could have hung with Sosa. I prefer they keep the sport clean, but I think we all know that isn't happening.
Oh yeah, they were included in my etc. Sosa's head grew about 8 sizes too. I hated that silly homerun chase when it happened. The steroid era is 100% Bud Selig's fault for pimping that chase so much when everyone knew they were both juicing.
Haha, good times. 😃 I just remember how it was such a big deal. So crazy to look back on now. I really wish we still got the Tigers games, but YouTube TV dropped Fox Sports Detroit. I remember the one year I played fantasy baseball, it was like a full time job!
