Carlos Vela joined Arsenal as a 17-year-old from Chivas. During his time at the London club, the Mexican player managed to get loaned to several clubs, but he also managed to appear 64 times for the club and score 11 goals. In 2012, Vela switched to Real Sociedad on a permanent deal, which was a huge relief to the striker.

The most important part of my career was when I came to San Sebastian for my new family, Vela tells GQ and elaborates:

I came from three years in London where I couldn't adapt. I don't quite know how to explain it. It's a place I don't have fond memories of. I wanted to get away from there.

I started enjoying football again after three bad years in England. I knew nothing about the Basque Country. I just wanted so much away from Arsenal, so when I heard I had an offer to play and get away from England, I said, 'I love it!'
