Gerrard: I can never manage this EPL team
Carlo Ancelotti went to Real Madrid, and therefore Everton had to go out and find a new manager. Many were rumored to the club, but one of the more controversial candidates was Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is currently having great success with Rangers in Scotland.
Fans were not thrilled with the possibility that one of arch-rivals' best over time could possibly end up being the new manager, but according to Gerrard himself, it was never on the table and he would never have taken the job. This is what the Englishman says in an interview with ESPN:
I was shocked and surprised that my name was mentioned at all in connection with the job. I do not know where it came from. Maybe it was just the newspapers speculating. Maybe there was a truth in that. I do not know, but I will never be in charge of them.
However, Everton still ended up hiring a controversial candidate when the choice fell on former Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez, who spent six seasons at Anfield and won a Champions League trophy.
