2003, el último récord
No es el año, no; aunque viniendo de un país con una gran tradición vitivinícola podría mencionar que hay algunos buenos vinos de esa temporada que podrían ser récord de algo, de precio en principio.
No continuaré con el misterio, 2003 es la cantidad de puntos que le faltan a Lebron James para quebrar la última marca de importancia que le queda en su vida como basquetbolista de profesión, ser el máximo anotador en toda la historia de ese deporte.
Con una trayectoria más allá de cualquier razonamiento lógico, con 21 años como profesional, los últimos 15 siendo la estrella indiscutida de la NBA, con 4 anillos en 3 diferentes equipos, 8 premios MVP y 19 elecciones al All Star, aún le queda esa marca por romper y no será fácil.
¿Pero entonces quién es el dueño del récord? quizás muchos no lo sepan, pero no es un NBA. Es un histórico jugador brasileño que quizás por haber nacido en un país donde el deporte del cesto con red no es tan popular y su trascendencia mundial no se acerca ni por asomo a la de la super liga norteamericana, me refiero a Oscar Schmidt que jugó 30 años como profesional, su largo historial incluyó 5 juegos olímpicos y 4 mundiales.
Por supuesto en Brasil Oscar es un ídolo, el "mano santa", el Pelé del basquetbol le han dicho y no es poca cosa viniendo del país donde el Rey es idolatrado. Al igual que Maradona, fue el estandarte de los pobres, en este caso del norte de Brasil que enfrentaba a los ricos y poderosos del Sur. Había nacido en Natal el mismo día que Michael Jordan aunque 5 años antes. Su marca de 49.737 puntos es hasta ahora la mayor jamás alcanzada por ningún otro profesional y para todo el mundo parecía inalcanzable, pero Lebron está a solo 2003 de lograrlo.
No solo es sorprende por el número sino además porque Oscar no tuvo jamás la capacidad atlética de Lebron o Michael Jordan para poner a los dos máximos exponentes a nivel mundial, sin embargo, su depurada técnica, a decir del mismo Oscar copiada de Larry Bird a la que le agregó una gran dedicación y un entrenamiento con enorme rigurosidad para lograr ser letal en el perímetro y bajo el aro, fueron el motor que impulsó su gran trayectoria.
Pese a sus números sorprendentes Oscar Schmidt no jugó en la NBA, los Nets estuvieron muy cerca de contratarlo, pero diferentes causas hicieron que no se concretara, entre ellas el poco entusiasmo demostrado por el brasileño para jugar en la liga de las estrellas; en 1984, justamente el año de nacimiento de Lebron, había sido seleccionado en un puesto muy lejano del draft y él lo consideró un insulto. Sin embargo, los de Nueva Jersey se rindieron a sus números y su juego y muchos años después de esa fallida contratación lo convocaron para un homenaje donde retiraron el número 14, el mismo que Oscar utilizó durante toda su carrera. Parece un homenaje tardío a este enorme jugador.
Volviendo a Lebron, dije al principio que no le será fácil obtener esos 2003 puntos, con 38 años sobre sus espaldas y de acuerdo a su promedio de goleo alcanzado en fase regular del año anterior, necesitaría entre 70 y 80 partidos, algo que no viene alcanzando últimamente, en la temporada pasada jugó 55 encuentros de fase regular a lo que sumó otros 16 en postemporada. Parece difícil, al menos en esta temporada.
Veremos si sus estadísticas se mueven en otro sentido, no sería impensado; Lebron nos tiene acostumbrados a los grandes logros y ahora tiene algunos incentivos adicionales como ser el posible ingreso de su hijo mayor a la NBA para el año próximo.
No olvidemos que el propio jugador dijo alguna vez que su historia no terminaría hasta que jugara con sus hijos. De continuar un tiempo más, seguramente ese 2003 será superado por una nueva marca, una más en su carrera.
