El Masters de Augusta ya comenzó (SPA - ENG)
El primer major del calendario anual del golf mundial comienza oficialmente en el día de hoy aunque la fiesta ha iniciado el día lunes pasado cuando los jugadores, caddies y toda esa enorme cantidad de personas encargadas de la organización arribaron a los links de Augusta National en el estado de Georgia.
Este torneo es el preferido de muchos entre los que me incluyo, su historia, tradición, la belleza de su diseño y la mística que lo rodea son componentes poderosos que lo convierten en el sueño de todo golfista, más allá que ganar cualquier de los cuatro más importantes también es anhelo de esos grandes profesionales que entrenan y se preparan toda su vida para ese momento.
Ya lo he mencionado antes pero para recordarlo, principalmente para aquellos que no son simpatizantes de este deporte, además del Master hay otros tres torneos que conforman el Grand Slam del golf mundial: el PGA que se juega en mayo, el Abierto de los Estados Unidos a disputarse en junio y el Abierto Británico que tradicionalmente cierra esta mini gira en el mes de julio.
Este año como quizás nunca antes hubo y hay controversias debidas a la escisión del circuito de la PGA, algunos de los principales jugadores fueron tentados por una nueva liga denominada LIV que está organizada por capitales árabes y distribuye premios muy superiores a los que acostumbra repartir la máxima institución del golf mundial. Por una decisión a mi entender acertada, todos los ex campeones del Master que lo deseen, pueden y de hecho van a participar en el torneo. En el día martes de esta semana se realizó la tradicional cena de los campeones que está reservada solo para los ex ganadores del torneo y es organizada por el último ganador correspondiendo ese honor a Scottie Scheffer, triunfador de la edición 2022. Se vivió una jornada relajada y sin incidentes pese a que en el pasado hubo críticas cruzadas, algunas de elevado tono entre los que se quedaron y los que se fueron tentados por los mejores premios y condiciones de juego.
En el día de ayer hubo otro evento programado y tradicional que es el desafío del par 3 donde participan la mayoría de los inscriptos al torneo principal y tiene la particularidad de ser un encuentro relajante antes de la gran contienda, muchos jugadores son acompañados por sus esposas o novias, hijos, otros familiares y amigos.
Pude ver las imágenes en directo y es un evento para disfrutar, por ejemplo hubo cinco hoyos en un golpe, dos de ellos obtenidos por el mismo jugador en hoyos consecutivos, algo que solo ocurrió cinco veces en toda la historia de este simpático torneo. Uno de los que lograron la hazaña de embocar en un solo golpe fue el campeón defensor Scheffer quien embocó de aire en un golpe que no se ve habitualmente. Un dato de color indica que jamás el ganador del desafío del par 3 ha ganado luego el torneo principal, eso quizás juega en la mente de muchos que probablemente prefieran que gane cualquier otro.
Otro momento emotivo fue ver a uno de los tres grandes, como se denomina al trío integrado por Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus y Gary Player, el primero de ellos ya fallecido. El sudafricano Gary Player participó del torneo de par 3 siendo su 57 vez consecutiva en formar parte del mismo, con 87 años de edad demuestra que aun puede jugar en un muy aceptable nivel.
Hablando de los tres grandes es una tradición anterior a la aparición de Tiger Woods y por la edad y su todavía vigencia no integra ese exclusivo grupo que supo ser lo más importante de una época que no volverá. Seguramente le espera su merecido sitio en el futuro. Es costumbre que los tres grandes hagan cada uno de ellos el tiro de salida para luego dar comienzo al la competencia real, el lugar de Palmer ha sido meritoriamente reemplazado por Tom Watson, un ex jugador de una generación posterior a ellos pero también con un récord impresionante que además se ganó la simpatía de todo el mundo golfístico por su comportamiento ejemplar y su don de gente.
Pero basta de palabras, en solo unas horas estarán comenzando los primeros a transitar el hermoso y difícil trazado de Augusta, es momento de callar y observar. Muchos dicen que el verdadero torneo comienza en el hoyo 10 del día domingo, no les crean, desde que se pone en juego la primera pelota el drama, la épica y el espectáculo está garantizado.
