Playoffs (SPA-ENG)
Luego de 18 cortas semanas en las que disfrutamos a pleno de la NFL, llegó la temporada de definiciones. Ayer dieron comienzo los playoffs, dos juegos en los que se definieron los primeros clasificados en esta ronda denominada Wild Card.
Se disputaron 2 de los 3 encuentros correspondientes a la Conferencia Nacional que posibilitan definir qué equipos pasan a la siguiente ronda; el segundo clasificado, los Chicago Bears, debieron enfrentar al séptimo, en este caso los Packers de Green Bay. De acuerdo a lo visto durante la etapa regular, los Osos eran favoritos y así lo corroboraron venciendo a los empacadores por 31 a 27, un encuentro al parecer bastante disputado ya que de manera sorpresiva, los de Green Bay habían obtenido una clara ventaja al cierre de la primera mitad con un marcador de 21 a 3 que parecía definitivo, sin embargo lo mejor estaba por venir y con una segunda mitad de 28 a 6 en favor de los osos, dieron vuelta el resultado final imponiendo su favoritismo., No pude ver ese encuentro aunque supongo la alegría de los de Chicago y la desazón de los Packers que vieron como una victoria casi segura se les escurrió como el agua entre los dedos en un fatídico último cuarto donde recibieron nada menos que 25 puntos en contra.
El encuentro que sí pude ver fue el de Carolina Panthers contra Los Ángeles Rams, en la previa parejo de acuerdo a las posiciones obtenidas en la conferencia: 4to. y 5to. respectivamente. Sin embargo, no debemos dejarnos engañar por esas posiciones, la realidad indica que el equipo de Los Ángeles había tenido una campaña sensiblemente mejor en temporada regular que la de su contrincante con 12 victorias y 5 derrotas contra apenas 8 victorias y 9 derrotas de los afincados en la ciudad de Charlotte, Carolina del Norte.
El encuentro fue muy disputado, con un arranque de 14 a 0 en favor de los Rams debido principalmente a errores de las panteras, los carneros pudieron haber definido el pleito o al menos hacerlo más sufrido para los locales ya que unos minutos antes de la finalización de la primera mitad, tuvieron la posibilidad de aumentar la ventaja, una mala decisión de jugársela en 4ta. oportunidad en vez de patear un gol de campo sencillo, no solamente les privó de una mayor diferencia sino que por el contrario envalentonó a los de Carolina que descontaron rápidamente con un touchdown y luego consiguieron otro finalizando esa primera mitad, con un marcador de 17 a 14 en favor de los carneros se fueron al descanso. En la segunda parte no se sacaron ventas y ambos finalizaron el encuentro con 1 gol de campo y 2 touchdowns por bando, prevaleciendo al final los afincados en Los Ángeles por apenas una diferencia de un gol de campo. Un muy interesante partido que pude disfrutar a pleno.
Hoy continuarán los juegos de comodín con 3 encuentros más; para finalizar la ronda de la Conferencia Nacional, Philadelphia Eagles se medirá con los 49ers de San Francisco, harán su debut por la Conferencia Americana los Buffalo Bills que enfrentarán a Jacksonville Jaguars y Los Ángeles Chargers hará lo propio con New England Patriots, para mí, el equipo sorpresa de estos playoffs.
Quedará un solo encuentro para definir esta ronda de comodines, en el día de mañana se enfrentarán Houston Texans con Pittsburgh Steelers. Todos prometen una gran lucha por pasar a la siguiente fase, todos aspiran a llegar indemnes a febrero, cuando en el estadio de San Francisco Bay Area se defina el Super Bowl LX.
Playoffs
After 18 short weeks of enjoying the NFL, the decisive season has arrived. The playoffs began yesterday with two games that determined the first teams to qualify for the Wild Card round.
Two of the three NFC games have been played, which will determine which teams advance to the next round. The second-seeded Chicago Bears faced the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers. Based on what we saw during the regular season, the Bears were the favorites, and they lived up to expectations by defeating the Packers 31-27. It was a close game, as Green Bay surprisingly took a commanding 21-3 lead at halftime, a score that seemed insurmountable. However, the best was yet to come, and with a 28-6 second half in favor of the Bears, they turned the game around, proving their status as favorites. I didn't get to see that game, but I can imagine the joy of the Chicago fans and the disappointment of the Packers, who saw a near-certain victory slip through their fingers in a disastrous fourth quarter where they conceded a whopping 25 points.
The game I did manage to watch was the Carolina Panthers vs. Los Angeles Rams matchup, which was considered a close contest based on their conference standings: 4th and 5th, respectively. However, we shouldn't be misled by those standings. The reality is that the Los Angeles team had a significantly better regular season than their opponent, with 12 wins and 5 losses compared to just 8 wins and 9 losses for the team based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The game was hard-fought, with the Rams jumping out to a 14-0 lead, mainly due to errors by the Panthers. The Rams could have sealed the victory or at least made it a tougher game for the home team, as just minutes before halftime, they had a chance to extend their lead. A poor decision to go for it on fourth down instead of an easy field goal not only cost them a larger advantage but, on the contrary, emboldened the Carolina team, who quickly narrowed the gap with a touchdown and then added another, ending the first half with a 17-14 lead for the Rams. The second half ended without any scoring, and both teams finished with one field goal and two touchdowns each. The Los Angeles team ultimately prevailed by a single field goal. It was a very interesting game that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The Wild Card games continue today with three more matchups. To conclude the NFC round, the Philadelphia Eagles will face the San Francisco 49ers. The Buffalo Bills will make their AFC debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Los Angeles Chargers will take on the New England Patriots, who, in my opinion, have been the surprise team of these playoffs.
Only one game remains to determine the winner of this Wild Card round. Tomorrow, the Houston Texans will face the Pittsburgh Steelers. All three teams promise a fierce battle to advance to the next round, hoping to reach Super Bowl LX unscathed in February at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
