Luego de las suspensiones por tormentas fuertes que hicieron que el sábado prácticamente no se pudiera jugar, en el día de ayer tuvimos definición.

Por supuesto que fue una maratónica jornada que comenzó muy temprano para que todos pudieran terminar la tercera ronda inconclusa y luego, una vez definidas las posiciones de salida para la cuarta y última ronda, el juego retomó los carriles normales llegando a una definición bastante antes de que se acabara la luz solar, cosa que parecía imposible.

Comenzó la última ronda con Brooks Koepka con cuatro golpes de ventaja sobre el vasco Jon Rahm, de acuerdo a los antecedentes previos del norteamericano, ganador de cuatro majors en su carrera, parecía un triunfo asegurado contra Rahm que solo tenía un major en su haber y en los últimos torneos no había jugado todo lo bien que suele hacerlo.

Sin embargo en la cancha se ven los pingos, decía un antiguo adagio más utilizado en las carreras de caballos pero que por el sentido que tiene se aplica a cualquier deporte. Ambos comenzaron bastante dubitativos, probablemente debido a los nervios de estar frente a una victoria más que importante, de a poco Rahm comenzó a descontar los golpes de ventaja de Koepka pero más por los errores de éste último que por méritos propios, sin embargo al alcanzar y pasar por un golpe al norteamericano, el cerebro de Rahm dio un vuelco y comenzó a ser más agresivo, prácticamente sin fallar un tiro; mientras esto ocurría, Koepka se derrumbaba.

Una enorme alegría fue ver a Phil Mickelson que con 52 años firmaba una tarjeta de -7 golpes y se colocaba transitoriamente al frente en el club house con -8, en ese momento Rahm estaba -10 faltándole aun 8 hoyos por transitar, las posibilidades del veterano dependían solo de una mala actuación del español en esos últimos hoyos.

No ocurrió y no solamente mantuvo la ventaja sino que la incrementó, Koepka luchó todo lo que pudo pero finalmente ocupó la segunda ubicación junto a Mickelson con -8. La ventaja de Rahm fue de 4 golpes, contundente demostración del vasco que además se llevó un premio de 3.240.000 dólares y 600 puntos para FedexCup, recuperó el número 1 del mundo relegando al anterior ganador del torneo, Scottie Scheffler al segundo lugar del ranking.

La lista de latinos ganadores de la chaqueta verde sumó un nuevo integrante que ahora está compuesto por cuatro españoles y un argentino. Rahm dedicó el triunfo al dos veces ganador de Augusta, el mayor ídolo golfístico de España, Severiano Ballesteros, fallecido en el año 2011 y quién justamente en el día de ayer hubiera cumplido 66 años de edad.

Luego llegó el momento del saludo con la familia y por último la ceremonia de premiación, todo absolutamente merecido para alguien que está llamado a conseguir grandes cosas en este hermoso deporte.
