Fue un 5 de setiembre del año 2001, jamás lo olvidaré.

Estaba en el estadio Monumental de River Plate junto a mi hijo y dos amigos que vinieron desde Río Negro especialmente para ver el encuentro que estaba por comenzar, me recuerdo ansioso esperando el inicio del match entre Argentina y Brasil por las eliminatorias sudamericanas clasificatorias para el mundial de Corea-Japón del año siguiente.

Mi expectativa era absoluta, estaba allí junto a otras 70.000 personas para observar a la selección jugando el mejor fútbol que jamás yo hubiera visto en un equipo nacional en cualquier tiempo pasado; tan buen funcionamiento tenía ese seleccionado que me animo a proyectar al presente tal afirmación e incluir a los seleccionados que consiguieron la copa del mundo en los años 1978, 1986 y recientemente en el 2022. Así por lo menos lo sentí yo.

Mientras aguardábamos que se hiciera la hora de la salida al campo de juego de ambas selecciones, me puse a hablar con un japonés que había venido desde su lejano país natal para ver a la sensación de ese momento, nos comunicamos en un inglés que ambos hablábamos mal pero que nos sirvió para entendernos, al menos en los aspectos futbolísticos. Algo raro, que no alcanzo a comprender del todo, ocurre con muchos japoneses, aman ciertas cosas de mi país, de una manera tan intensa que sorprende a los nacidos aquí, aman el tango, el fútbol, nuestra forma de ser tan distinta a la de ellos. Lo dejo aquí, es solo una nota de color adicional y por lo demás, no tengo estudios específicos sobre el comportamiento humano.

El partido comenzó de la peor manera, a los dos minutos de juego y desde un inocente saque lateral Brasil consigue abrir el marcador gracias a una jugada absolutamente fortuita para ellos y desgraciada para Ayala quien batió nuestra propia valla, como se suele decir habitualmente, salimos del vestuario perdiendo y nada menos que contra Brasil. Para mi desgracia personal, estábamos ubicados muy cerca de la hinchada brasileña, nos gritaron el gol prácticamente en nuestro rostro.

Argentina dominó a voluntad el resto del tiempo de juego, con un despliegue asombroso que me hizo recordar a la maravillosa Holanda de 1974 conocida como la “Naranja Mecánica”, equipo que deslumbró al mundo con esa dinámica nunca vista hasta aquel momento, el fútbol total se le llamó y en esa dinámica no había posiciones fijas, cualquiera defendía, cualquiera llegaba a posiciones de gol, todos ayudaban. Argentina jugaba así. Recién en el segundo tiempo pudo doblegar a los cuádruples campeones mundiales hasta aquel momento.

Tal supremacía logro Argentina en ese torneo que obtuvo una diferencia de 12 puntos con el segundo que fue Ecuador y 13 con Brasil que clasificó tercero en una performance que dejó a todos los fanáticos verde amarelos muy descontentos. La selección celeste y blanca obtuvo 13 triunfos, 4 empates y una sola derrota, justamente frente a Brasil de visitante en un encuentro que no debió perder.

El director técnico de aquel recordado equipo era Marcelo Bielsa, quien ayer fue confirmado como nuevo entrenador de la selección uruguaya de fútbol reemplazando a Diego Alonso luego de la decepción en el mundial de Qatar.

Hay motivos para la alegría en Uruguay, pero también preocupación; Marcelo Bielsa tiene el apodo de “loco” y aunque se lo han colocado principalmente por tener un comportamiento histriónico tanto en los entrenamientos como en el banco de suplentes, también se reconoce que suele tomar decisiones intempestivas y tener actitudes y comportamientos fuera de lo común.

Pese al gran torneo que disputó la Argentina para aquella clasificación, en la copa del mundo del año siguiente y siendo uno de los principales favoritos, fracasó rotundamente al quedar eliminada en fase de grupos, un poco por mala suerte y otra por una gran desunión del grupo de jugadores. Curiosamente Brasil, quien había tenido un pobre desempeño en la etapa previa y concurría al mundial sin tantas expectativas, se coronó campeón por 5ta. vez en su historia. Por cosas como esa este deporte es maravilloso, pese a las dirigencias, los árbitros, la corrupción y ahora también el VAR.

Bielsa, aunque golpeado por la temprana eliminación continuó siendo el técnico de la selección nacional pero ya nada volvió a ser como antes, la magia se había retirado y aunque tuvo un buen desempeño, perdió la final de la Copa América disputada en Perú en el año 2004. Unos meses después pareció volver a tomar impulso al conseguir la medalla de oro en los juegos olímpicos de Atenas, sin embargo, renunció al cargo apenas tres semanas después de ese enorme logro.

Su récord con la selección nacional tiene números destacados, 70 partidos disputados con 43 triunfos, 16 empates y 11 derrotas, con 127 goles a favor y 63 en contra.

Luego de dirigir a la selección chilena y clasificarla a una copa del mundo después de 12 años deambuló por Europa dirigiendo varios equipos, recuerdo en estos momentos su paso por el Leeds a quien devolvió a la primera división de Inglaterra, también tuvo un paso fugaz por la Lazio a la que renunció apenas unos pocos después de firmar el contrato. Transitó por las competitivas ligas europeas, tomó las riendas del Athletic de Bilbao y luego paso a Francia, donde dirigió al Lillie y al Olympique de Marsella despertando amores y odios casi por igual, así es el “Loco” Bielsa.

Ahora con más de 60 años de edad enfrenta un nuevo desafío, ojalá pueda obtener de los hermanos uruguayos un mejor funcionamiento colectivo, conocemos de sobra la jerarquía de los jugadores que triunfan principalmente en Europa, material para trabajar tiene y de sobra.

Solo espero que no sea tan bueno como sé que es, que le vaya bien y solo pierda con nosotros.

A crazy loose in Uruguay
