Us Open, nuevo triunfador (SPA-ENG)
Observando y analizando el sábado por la noche, al finalizar la tercera ronda del US Open, campeonato integrante del Grand Slam del golf, veía entre los líderes a varios ex campeones y otros poderosos golfistas con los pergaminos suficientes como para volver a imponerse, solo uno estaba algo fuera de lugar en el leaderboard, un tal Wyndham Clark, jugador de 29 años de edad con escasos pergaminos; solo un triunfo, fue justamente en esta temporada en el Wells Fargo luego de varios años de intentarlo en el exigente circuito de la PGA en 136 participaciones previas. Este jugador había participado anteriormente solo en siete majors y nunca había superado el puesto 70. Sorprendente performance en el campeonato que en los papeles es el más difícil de los cuatro.
Todos, entre los que me incluyo, los descartamos para el domingo. Suponíamos que sencillamente no aguantaría la presión y sucumbiría como muchos otros antes. Un error enorme de subestimación ya que lideró todo el día con un golf sólido y una gran confianza en su juego que demostró a lo largo de los 18 hoyos, algunos muy largos y difíciles.
Muchos simpatizábamos con Rickie Fawler un gran jugador que pese a tener varios triunfos en el circuito, jamás pudo ganar uno de estos grandes campeonatos, aunque en varias ocasiones estuvo en el top 5. También Rory Mcllroy era uno de los preferidos del público, ya tiene en su haber cuatro campeonatos mayores pero hace más de 9 años del último conseguido. Scottie Scheffer, el número uno del mundo tampoco podía ser descartado, ya conocemos su empuje en el final de estos campeonatos y la calidad de su juego.
A excepción de lo que anuncié en la nota anterior, donde mencioné que los organizadores iban a tomar recaudos para que la cancha fuera más difícil y no volviera a ocurrir lo del primer día, nada de lo previsto respecto a los pronósticos ocurrió, Wyndham Clark se mantuvo con autoridad y excelente juego, solo pareció sentir la presión haciendo dos bogey consecutivos en los hoyos 15 y 16 pero ninguno de sus perseguidores consiguió descontar la diferencia y con pares muy cómodos en los dos últimos y difíciles hoyos cerró con autoridad logrando el triunfo final.
Como a muchos, este extraordinario triunfo le cambiará la vida para siempre, los 3.6 millones de dólares del premio destinados para el triunfador le traerán fama, obviamente fortuna, enormes contratos publicitarios y por sobre todo una gran confianza para encarar lo que viene.
¿Nace una nueva estrella golfística?, solo el tiempo lo dirá, por ahora solo le resta disfrutar de este momento mágico y prepararse mentalmente para no sucumbir a todo eso que logran los que triunfan.
