And one day he won again

I was not going to write about golf but about the World Cup, but only two games were played yesterday and I prefer to do my summary tonight or tomorrow with several games played and a clearer picture of how the ticket to the quarterfinals comes so here I am, unable to contain myself and informing lovers of this sport that on Sunday, finally, after 7 long years, our most representative golfer in the PGA has won again.

At the time, back in 2016, I had been excited about Emiliano Grillo, at that time a 23-year-old boy born in the province of Chaco although he migrated to the USA where he attended university and developed his skills in this difficult sport.

He turned professional in 2011 and went to play on the European tour after several years where he obtained some good results, he tried his luck in the United States participating in seven tournaments on the Web.com Tour where he obtained a victory and a second place achieving the long-awaited PGA Tour card. In his debut on the most important golf circuit in the world, he won the Frys.com Open in Napa and that allowed him to play all the majors of the year where he did very well, finishing 12th in the British Open, 13th in the PGA, 17th at the Augusta Masters and 54th at the US Open, those performances earned him the PGA Tour rookie of the year name.

An endless number of possibilities were open to this introverted young man, although with a good face.

However, that promise of a great player was being relegated, the years passed and the irregularity was a constant in his career, however, his excellent handling of the irons was a registered trademark that kept the possibility of other conquests latent, he just needed to improve in the green, his putter always cost him a lot but this year it seems that things have changed and on Sunday he was crowned champion in the Charles Schwab Challenge played on the difficult course of the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Saturday had started in the best way to quickly place first with -10 strokes under par on the course, although on hole 16 he made one of those mistakes that he usually makes when the pressure is felt and he threw his ball into the water, in those last few holes he lost 4 shots. However, the field was difficult and no one had been able to get too far, he was 4 shots off the leader, and on Sunday he would have a good chance if he did well.

And on Sunday he was almost perfect, with a consistent and intelligent game, without taking too many risks and only taking risks in the holes where he could, he began to discount shots, helped of course by the irregularity of those ahead.

At the tee of the 18th hole he was again -10 and was two shots ahead of two other golfers, Adam Shenk and Harry Hall, but on his tee shot he made a mistake that almost ruined all his effort, his drive was terrible and he hooked the ball to the right, ended up in a small drainage channel and had to drop under penalty of one stroke. He double-bogeyed and his advantage evaporated. Hall bogeyed the last hole and it was -7 but Shenk made par and evened it at the top of the leaderboard at -8, they had to go to a playoff.

Everything ended well for Grillo since he made a birdie against a pair of his rival and kept the trophy in the second hole of the tie-break to sudden death.

It had been 2,780 days since his previous triumph at a PGA tournament.

Now opportunities are opening up for him again, he entered the first 50 of the world ranking and that will allow him to play the two remaining majors of the season, he also secures the card for two years and pocketed 1.5 million dollars.

But it is not the only important thing, this year he has 5 top 10 finishes on the circuit and that is much more than in several previous years, it would seem that we are dealing with a person who is still simple, serious, and somewhat withdrawn but perhaps his confidence has improved a lot. Enough for me to at least get excited again every time I see him playing a new PGA tournament. He deserves it.
