Just as the South American qualifiers for Qatar 2002 would seem, a priori, to confirm the favoritism of Brazil and Argentina to qualify, in the European qualifiers there are some big teams that started off on the wrong foot and are gradually recovering.

This is the case of Germany, which started badly in Group J and has been recovering, although without showing at any time the confidence and associated play that made them fearsome in the last World Cups. Nevertheless, with 18 points, they have taken six points from their followers and their qualification seems to be more a matter of a couple more matches.

The replacement of players is making itself felt and although there are few doubts about their qualification, it is evident that in this preliminary phase the German battleship has left more doubts than convictions.

Yesterday they overcame an enthusiastic Romania by 2-1, who had started the match winning it from the very beginning, and Gnabry, one of the new stars of the German national team, tied it at the beginning of the second half. A few minutes from the end, Müller, one of Germany's historic players, gave the definitive victory.

Other teams that went through by the narrowest of margins were the Netherlands, who have a more complicated zone (despite being at the top), since two teams that apparently could not offer a fight for the first places, Norway and Turkey, are doing an excellent classification in their group and qualify at the moment second and third respectively in Group G, two and four points behind the leader, who has 16 points.

Russia and Croatia defeated Slovakia and Cyprus respectively and march in the first division of Group H making sterile the intentions of Slovenia and Slovakia who are 6 points behind to regain positions. The former beat Malta but the latter lost to the Russians.

So far, the trend shows Germany as favorites in Group J with a second place to be awarded very hard-fought between North Macedonia (12), Armenia, the surprise (12) and Romania (12).

In the other group matches played, Group H, it would seem that Croatia and Russia would have no problem in qualifying, both leading with 16 points.

Meanwhile, in Group G, the Netherlands (14) continues its triumphant march although the difference with the second Norway (14) and the third Turkey (12) does not allow them to rest on their laurels. The Dutch will have to be careful not to lose any of their next matches to qualify with more peace of mind. Even Montenegro is timidly peeking with 11 points and hopes of reaching at least second place. One of the most hard-fought groups without a doubt.

The curious fact is that while the qualifiers are played at the same time the UEFA Nations League also called Nations League a tournament created by UEFA from the 2018-2019 season in order to replace the international friendlies.

The final was a couple of days ago with the victory of France over Belgium 3-2.
