Imparable.

To say that Botafogo is one of the greatest soccer teams in Brazil is not to discover anything, by history, by tradition, although lately it has been in the doldrums.
He won 19 Rio de Janeiro championships, set records, and was the emblem of Brazilian soccer of a time.

But above all things it was the cradle of the immense "Mané" Garrincha. Manoel Francisco dos Santos was his real name. The "Mané" thing was in reference to the bird: free, pure and ugly, his own friends said, all the virtues condensed in a nickname.

Due to some setbacks and superstitions, Botafogo could never shake off the feeling of an unfortunate team. Perhaps because his time of his greatest splendor coincided with the life (and death) of his greatest idol: Garrincha. That is why his fans prefer to call him by his preferred nickname: Fogão.

The origin of the legend.

According to the myth or legend, bad luck was born at the end of the 1940s. And the characters in the popular imagination of Rio de Janeiro could not be different: a dog and the president of a club.

At that time a black and white dog, not belonging to a specific breed, moved, entered the clubhouse by chance. Maybe trying to get food. He was called Biriba and the closest translation of his name is found in a poker card game.

He won the affection of all and stayed to live in the stadium. One day, in a difficult match for Botafogo, Biriba appeared on the playing field by chance - perhaps to play himself, as you know, dogs like to play with the ball - and Botafogo won, also by chance.

He was immediately adopted as a pet. They dressed him in white knitwear. Tailored clothes and they sat him on the substitute bench. For things related to soccer, Brazilians take things very, very seriously.

And Fogão began to win and win. Unstoppable. A delight of football and triumphs that led to the title. Botafogo had not been champion for 12 years. It seemed like the end of a curse.

In the match against Vasco da Gama it emerged that they wanted to poison him. At this point Biriba was sacred. The team players took turns tasting the food before the dog.

By irony of luck, the same year that Biriba disappeared, Garrincha made his debut.

A crack born like so many others in the helplessness and frustration of a postponed society in which being a soccer star is the greatest revenge. With a leg shorter than the short one, with a crooked spine and with infantile polio behind him, he could not - theoretically. to play. But he played. His life seemed inspired by any part of the memorable Brazilian film Ciudad de Dios, by Fernando Meirelles. He lived and died in his own way. Of cirrhosis.

Vinicius himself in a sonnet dedicated to Garrincha says: "O Anjo das pernas tortas" (The angel with bowed legs): "A pass from Didí, Garrincha advances / with the leather at his feet, the watchful eye, / dribbles once, and twice, then rest / as if measuring the risk of the moment. // He has the feeling, and goes and throws himself / faster than the thought itself, / dribbles twice more, the ball dances / happily between his feet , A foot of wind! // In ecstasy, the contrite crowd, / in an act of death it rises and shouts / Its unison song of hope. // Garrincha, the angel, listens and agrees: goooool! / It's pure image: a G that kicks an O / into the goal, the L. It's pure dance! ".
