Senegal Are Through To The Next Round After An Astonishing Win Against Ecuador
What a day it was for the African cup of nations champions Senegal in the world cup, they are now the first African team to qualify for the round of sixteen in the Fifa 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In my previous post, I said Senegal has what it takes to qualify for the next round because they have that winning mentality to push forward in tough matches and I was right.
I am starting to think their opening match against the Netherlands shouldn't have ended in a loss, although the Netherlands dominated the match I think the Senegalese players had less confidence in themselves. The news of losing their star man Sadio Mane also might have affected the team, we all know the impact Mane brings to his African team, and his presence would have given his side a confidence boost.
Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 in an intense match, Ecuador has been fantastic in the world cup; they won their first match against Qatar and drew against the Netherlands in their second match. Valencia has been the star man for Ecuador in the world cup but today Senegal's defense was tough for the Ecuadorian man as he had little impact in the match.
Senegal's first goal came from a penalty kick, Ismaila Sarr from Senegal was brought down by an Ecuador defender in the box, Ismaila Sarr was confident with the ball as he placed it into the goalpost sending Ecuador's goalkeeper flying the wrong way.
Ecuador leveled the scoreline in the 67th minute of the second half from a corner kick, Moisés Caicedo was in the right spot when his teammate Felix Torres headed the ball to him as he made a tap-in into the goalposts, it looked like Ecuador was on the right track until 3 minutes later.
Senegal got their lead back when Ecuador's starman made an error in his box which gave Kalidou Koulibaly from Senegal the opportunity to capitalize on the loose ball and played a shot into the goalposts. It was an important goal that led to Senegal's victory, Ecuador was relentless to get an equalizer but Senegal's defense was unbreakable.
The final whistle was blown and the Senegal team and coaching staff on the bench rushed out to celebrate the victory. It was a beautiful moment for Senegal and also a heartbreaking moment for Ecuador. Most of Ecuador's players were in tears but that is what football is about you either win it or lose, big congratulations to my African brothers they deserve their victory and I look forward to seeing how they progress in the tournament.
