Turkey has achieved great success in both volleyball and basketball over the past few weeks. We came second in the Women's Volleyball World Cup and second in the Men's Basketball European Championship, Eurobasket. But we didn't come first in either. This reminded me once again that not every fairy tale has a happy ending.

We started the volleyball matches wonderfully. We were undefeated until the final. We easily defeated the United States, one of the biggest favorites of the tournament. Yes, they are undergoing a rejuvenation process, but some of their key players were still playing. In the semifinals, we defeated Japan, who had incredible defense, 3-1, with very little difficulty. We faced Italy in the final. Yes, they were huge favorites, but we also started very well. The match ended 3-2, but the sets we won were decided very differently. The sets we lost were all lost by a maximum of 2 points. In the final set, we lost motivation for a moment, and unfortunately, the result was disappointing. If Ebrar Karakurt had been substituted early in the final set, we might have won the cup, but it's not easy to blame the coach for this; after all, Ebrar Karakurt contributed greatly until we reached the final.

The same thing happened at Eurobasket. We didn't lose any games in the group stage. Serbia was perhaps one of the biggest favorites of the tournament, but we beat them in the final game of the group stage in the battle for first place. The matches against Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic, and Portugal were very easy for us. We eliminated Sweden in the round of 16, which was a relatively tough match. We beat Poland in the quarterfinals and Greece in the semifinals. The Greece match, in particular, was an extremely easy game for us. Greece was favored in this game too, but we easily defeated them, 68-94. Basketball fans can imagine how big a difference that is. It was a game where Alperen Şengün, Cedi Osman, Shane Larkin, and many other players shone. The reason I mention these three players in particular is that they performed very well in all the games. In the final game, these three players again performed wonderfully, and Adem Bona joined them. There were four great performances, but we lost in a truly frustrating way. Every three-pointer Germany took was on target. Turkey only made 9 three-pointers, while Germany made 14. Even their three-pointers from outer space were on target. Losing the game by just 5 points was painful.

Finishing second in both tournaments is a great achievement for Turkey, but coming so close to victory and losing is painful. Each time, it feels like it's going to happen, but it doesn't. There's no need to even mention soccer, but we had made great progress in these two sports. Losses like this make you feel like no matter how hard you try, it's just not going to happen.

Türkiye son birkaç haftadır hem Voleybolda hem de basketbolda çok büyük başarılar elde etti. Kadın Voleybol dünya kupasında ikinci olduk ve Erkek Basketbol Avrupa şampiyonası yani Eurobasket'te de ikinci olduk. Ama hiçbirinde birinci olamadık. Voleybolda maçlara harika başladık. Finale kadar asla yenilmedik. Turnuvanın en büyük favorilerinden Amerika'yı zorlanmadan yendik. Evet bir gençleşme operasyonu içindeler ama as oyuncularından bazıları da oynuyordu. Yarı finalde inanılmaz bir savunmaya sahip Japonya'yı çok az zorlansak da 3-1 yendik. Finalde de İtalya karşısına çıktık. Evet onlar çok büyük bir favoriydi ama biz de çok iyi başladık. Maç 3-2 bitti ama bizim kazandığımız setler çok farklı bir şekilde sonuçlandı. Kaybettiğimiz setler ise hep en fazla 2 farkla kaybedilmiş setler. Son sette bir anlık motivasyon kaybı ve maalesef sonuç hüsran. Son sette Ebrar Karakurt erkenden değiştirilse belki de kupayı kazanan biz olacaktık ama bu konuda teknik adamı suçlamak da kolay değil, sonuçta o finale çıkana kadar Ebrar Karakurt çok büyük katkı sağladı.

Eurobasket'te de aynı şey yaşandı. Gruplarda hiç yenilgi almadık. Sırbistan belki de turnuvanın en büyük favorilerinden biri ama biz grupların son maçında 1.lik mücadelesinde onları yendik. Litvanya, Estonya, Çek Çumhuriyeti ve Portekiz maçları zaten bizim açımızdan çok kolay geçti. Son 16 turunda İsveç'i eledik, nispeten zorlu bir maçtı. Çeyrek finalde Polonya ve yarı finalde Yunanistan'ı geçtik. Özellikle Yunanistan maçı bizim açımızdan aşırı kolay bir maç oldu. Bu maçta da Yunanistan favori olarak gösteriliyordu ama biz onları kolayca yendik, 68-94. Basketbol izleyicileri bunun ne kadar büyük bir fark olduğunu tahmin edebilir. Alperen Şengün, Cedi Osman, Shane Larkin ve daha birçok oyuncunun parladığı bir maçtı. Özellikle bu üç oyuncunun ismini yazmamın sebebi bu üç oyuncunun bütün maçlarda çok iyi performans göstermiş olması. Final maçında yine bu üç oyuncu harika performans gösterdi ve yanlarına Adem Bona eklendi. 4 harika performans vardı ama gerçekten en sinir bozucu şekilde kaybettik. Almanya'nın attığı her üçlük isabetli oldu. Türkiye sadece 9 isabetli üçlük attı ve Almanya tam 14 üçlük attı. Uzaydan attıkları üçlükler bile isabetli oldu. Sadece 5 farkla maçı kaybetmek acı vericiydi.

İkinci olmak iki turnuvada da Türkiye için büyük bir başarı ama bu kadar galibiyete yaklaşıp kaybetmek acı veriyor. Her seferinde tam olacakmış gibi oluyor ama olmuyor. Futboldan bahsetmeye gerek bile yok ama bu iki dalda harika ilerlemiştik. Bu tarz kayıplar ne kadar uğraşırsanız uğraşın olmayacakmış gibi hissettiriyor.
