CHELSEA'S WORST SEASON AND TRANSFERS!

What is Chelsea's fate as season is about to began?

2022/23 Season was really a season of misery, with loads of injuries to Chelsea's first team players but that is always the case for every team in every season.

2022/23 season was going to be a year of transition for the West London club in the wake of Abramovich's departure, and the club seemingly committed to a long term project by replacing the man who guided them to the Champions League glory in 2020/21 season in the person of Thomas Tuchel, with Brighton Manager, Graham Potter.

New owner Todd Boehly, however left Potter with a bloated, unbalanced squad. And while Potter should not be exempted from criticism, it should also be noted that he wasn't exactly given the best chance to stamp his authority(play style) during his first year at the helm of things in the club. The unconvincing results week-in week-outs led to his sack and Frank Lampard, after being fired at Everton because of poor performances, was appointed on an interim base, to re-establish some good feelings around the club and they managed to finish in 12th position with 44points, sitting 1point behind Crystal Palace and 3points above wolves who amass a total of 41 points after 38 matches. However, that wasn't Chelsea's lowest finish in the Premier League history. Chelsea were a mediocre top flight team during the first half of the 90s but only twice did they finish in the bottom half of the table. Record has it that between 1992/93 and 1994/95 season, 22 teams competed in the Premier League which meant the Blues' 11th-place finishes in the 1992/93 and 1994/95 saw them squeak into the top half. But in 1994/95 season, they finished 14th on the log which is their lowest premier league finish to date.

They notched 51points from 42games.

LATEST TRANSFERS

Chelsea's new owner, Todd Boehly spent a total of £323million (€329 million) in January 2023 to secure the services of David Datro Fofana, Bénoit Badiashile, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos and loaned the services of Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid. Only one first team player left the club and that was Jorginho who joined Arsenal on a permanent deal worth £12million. It was a very unimaginable transfer window to Chelsea's owner who flexed his financial muscle and signed that number of players in a mid-season which is not always an easy task because clubs normally act stubbornly in negotiations since they do not want to disturb the momentum of their squad. With that heavy figure (£323m), Chelsea managed to avert violating Financial Fair Play. With that in mind, if they are to sign more players in the on-going transfer window, they need to offload players.

So far, Kalidou Koulibaly has joined Saudi Arabian side, Al- Hilal in a fee around £25million, the 32year old joined the blues last season from Napoli but endured a difficult debute season.

Mateo Kovacic has signed for Manchester City in a £30m fee. Kai Havertz has joined Arsenal in a deal worth £60m with an additional £5m in add-ons. N'Golo Kanté is expected to join Al-Ittihad as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30. César Azpilicueta who joined in 2012 is just waiting for the club to give the green light to mutual termination of his contract. It is the final step to let him leave the club immediately. Edouard Mendy has now agreed personal terms with Saudi side Al-Ahli. Negotiations are at the final stages for the Senegal goal keeper. Other players who are expected to follow suit are Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount. Mason Mount has made a huge decision which could impact his future at Chelsea amid interest from Manchester United. The 24-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford lately. The Red Devils are said to have three bids rejected by the West For Mount, with the third bid reportedly being in the £55m, including add-ons. But Chelsea are holding out with a counter-proposal of £58m plus £7m in add-ons for the Cobham graduate. Despite plenty of speculations regarding Mount's future, he doesn't look set to force a departure, he is expected to report for pre-spn training and the blues' tour of United States which kicks start on July 17.

Only if this is possible, there's tendency for a great season ahead

Meanwhile, the blues owner owners have no time for wallowing and pity, as the club has started to cut ties with players and give the incumbent figure of Mauricio Pochettino some room and organized squad to work with. The 51-year-old is expected to officially start work on July 1, 2023. Also, players in the West London club wish list this summer include Moisés Caicedo of Brighton, Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Romeo Lavia of Southampton, Diogo Costa of FC Porto, Andre Onana of Inter Milan, Jonathan David of Lille, Nicolas Jackson of Villarreal, David Raya of Brentford, Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus, Levi Colwill of Brighton, Mike Maignan of AC Milan, Manuel Ugarte of Sporting CP. It is left to be seen which of them will be signed for 2023/24 season.
