Why Kylian Mbappe won the 2024/25 European Golden Boot despite scoring fewer goals than Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Mbappe finished the La Liga season with 31 goals in 34 games, earning 62 coefficient points, while Gyokeres scored 39 goals in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, totaling 58.5 points.

The key factor was UEFA’s weighted scoring system, which awards 2 points per goal in Europe’s top five leagues (including La Liga) and 1.5 points per goal in lower-ranked leagues like Portugal’s.

This gave Mbappe the edge, as his goals carried greater weight.

Mbappe clinched the award with a brace against Real Sociedad in Real Madrid’s final match, surpassing Gyokeres and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (29 goals, 58 points).

Mbappe’s 42 goals across all competitions also made him Real Madrid’s highest-scoring debutant, breaking Ivan Zamorano’s 1992/93 record.

This marks Real Madrid’s fifth Golden Boot win and Mbappe’s first, as well as his securing of the Pichichi Trophy as La Liga’s top scorer.
