Rest in Piece : Taufik Ramsyah (Indonesian Goalkeeper Dies in Football Match)

Hello everyone and all members of the Community of Sports Talk Social, this is the first post in this community. Hopefully I can participate in this community by providing good and quality posts.

I am a sports fan, not as a sports person but I like watching sports matches. I almost like all sports matches, because I think they are fun and interesting spectacle. Some of the sports that I watch regularly are football, badminton or basketball.

Sad news
Football is the most popular sport in my country (Indonesia). There are several things about football that make our country world famous. For example, Indonesians have militant football supporters against the clubs they support, and sometimes clashes between supporters occur or there are allegations of match-fixing by the gambling mafia at football matches in Indonesia.

This time, bad news came back in Indonesian football. Again, one of the football players died from a severe impact that occurred during the match. This incident was experienced by Taufik Ramsyah, a 20-year-old goal keeper from the Tornado FC club during the Wahana FC vs. Tornado FC match in Liga 3 Indonesia (the third division of Indonesian football).

This is not the first time, this incident has happened many times in Indonesia and will probably continue to happen if there is no structural improvement. I noted that since 2000, there have been five players in the Indonesian football league who died while playing, some of them even died in the field. For example, Eri Irianto (Persebaya, 2000), Jumaidi Abdi (PKT Bontang, 2008), Akli Fairus (Persiraja, 2014), and Choirul Huda (Persela Lamongan, 2017). Football fans will remember the moment Marc Vivien Foe died in the Confederations Cup due to a heart attack. However, all the tragedies of the deaths of players in the Indonesian League were caused by brutal clashes between players.

Tragedy
The tragedy experienced by Taufik Ramsyah is quite tragic, he gets the brunt when trying to secure the ball from the opponent's attack. The opposing striker (Wahana FC) at that time ran to catch the ball, but was immediately saved by the goal keeper. Unfortunately, there was a collision to Taufik Ramsyah's head and he immediately collapsed at that time.

If you watch footage (you can see it on youtube) of the collision that occurred between Taufik Ramsyah (the goalkeeper of Tornado FC) and the Wahana FC attacker, we are very sad to see the actions of Wahana FC players when trying to chase the ball. I saw no attempt to prevent a collision, such as jumping to dodge. Actions taken by players such as intentionally injuring opposing players. Indeed, it is no secret that we know some actions of football players who are violent and tend to be rude to aim at damaging the mentality of opposing players, but we need to remember that sport is sportsmanship, why hold a football match if the players have to die on the field, this is not a gladiatorial arena.

Regulation
What made the incident worse was the slow handling of the medical team and match officials (such as referees and committees) to respond to the incident. I noted, it took a minute for the referee and the players to know the collision experienced by the goalkepper was very severe. One more thing that made my heart angry, when I read the news that the ambulance was late to the field because it was blocked by a parked car and then the lack of oxygen cylinders by the medical team made the situation worse.

The incident that happened to Taufik Ramsyah was the culmination of poor football governance in Indonesia. For the relevant stakeholders, only concerned with the continuity of the league without paying attention to other aspects, such as aspects of safety and education of players and referees. I often see inconsequential referee decisions such as giving an unfair penalty, or awarding an offside goal, however, when the referee is too late to take a response to an incident that puts the player's life at risk.

I pray and hope (even if it is impossible) this tragedy will be the last. Sometimes, I think what is the point of football if you have to sacrifice your life. Rest in peace, Taufik Ramsyah

Sad news indeed. I know here in South Africa medical teams have to be on hand at any sporting game. Even the lower leagues in rugby have ambulances in attendance plus clubs have medical staff. This is showing a lack of respect and care towards the players and they should stop playing until this is rectified. 5 players dying playing football is rather high as these cannot be all freak accidents. Possibly poor refereeing is leading to this.

Unfortunately, safety standards only exist in the premier league and some of the divisions below do not do that, and there is no check.

Sad indeed. Was there a punishment for any Wahana FC players?

The Indonesian FA is currently investigating the tragedy, reflecting on past experiences, usually players who commit violence are only banned from playing.

So sad, and those CT scans show just how shocking the injuries were. Also the fact there's a history of deaths is worrying. Thank you for sharing the story.
