From Betting Shops to Bytes
Hah! I remember the paranoid look on my dad's face when he found out I just got a job. I don't know if it was fear or anger, all I know was I really wanted my independence I was willing to do anything legit to have it. Before I land the job, I had started trying to get my hands on laundry jobs to get me started. But my father would have nothing to do with a child who washed other people's cloth for money especially not with the reputation he had built in the community.

So when I had my bath that morning, roped my bag around my neck, and stood in his presence to announce that I found a position in a betting shop close to our house, his paranoid face still hasn't left my memory. But I was stubborn. Always have. And I didn't want to listen to anything else than hit the road and arrive early for my first day at work.
Working in a betting shop, Betnaija to be precise gave me a good look into the world of gambling. Hah! God knows I learned over two, GG, BTS, over 2.5, Under two, home and away, home win, away win, etc., during the set period. Well, it did help me have better conversations with the opposite sex. Understanding football terms especially the white paper and gambling ones gave me a lift when it came to attracting the opposite sex. You could never have a boring conversation with me.
This job exposed me to a lot of things more than knowledge. I started being friends with people who under normal circumstances, and judging by my dad's influence, I wouldn't talk to them. They even started booking games at home, waiting by the roadside for me. Once I get to them, they will hand me the code and I'll work on it for them once I got to the office. Some of them selected games long enough to fill our shop.....just kidding, and handed them to me so I can book at the office.
It was fun to have a job that even though paid very little but opened my socializing nature a bit more than I expected. I understood there and then that you could have a job with a salary and still have daily feeding money provided. It was interesting. But believe me, I lost a lot of money on my first two days at work, my boss forgave the first day since it was my first time, but on the second day, my manager checked on time, and when we noticed I lost money again, he taught me how to pick winning games so once the tickets played out, I'll use the winning to replace the losses.
Please don't look at me like that. Yes, I know what you are thinking, it was addicting to learn how to gamble, and there were days I placed my boss's money on the line and lost terribly. It was merely #100 I kept telling myself until it wasn't #100 anymore... Haha.
Before I knew what was happening, the boys in the area started giving me money instead of games or codes to book games directly for them.. some of them claimed I had a certain luck that they wanted to tap into. Well, this was the part I did not allow myself to get roped into doing because I was afraid their trust in my luck might fail, and I'll get into trouble with my dad.
I only had this job for one month and a few weeks because right around the corner, someone came into my life, and moved me away from gambling into the world of ICT. He took me under his wing and taught me practical computing and I started learning about typing, photocopying, and internet service in his business center. I was saved from probably a life that will not only offend my dad but maybe turn me into a gambling addict.
I learned a lot about human psychology as a result of my first job. And yes, if I had the chance to do it again, I would. This time I would learn the inner workings of a casino and maybe set up my own betting houses. I wouldn't stick to white papers alone, I am sure an expansion would be a welcome development.
I figured if I had stayed long enough in that job, I would have had more direct access to reality than living in illusion and books. But I don't regret the move to ICT, it made my dad proud compared to when he first heard I was getting a betting Job, and today, my confidence level has grown because I am computer literate... Lol.
lol, I thought you should be gaining more money working in a betting shop, how come you are losing money? or do you mean you are also playing and losing?
I am familiar with those betting terms, 2.5, over 1 but i don't really understand what they mean because i am not a fan of football or such bet but I do hear my friends use those terms 😄

Yeah, I was losing money because I probably booked games and forgot to get money from the bookers. Knowing gamblers, they took advantage of my innocent and being new to the job and environment.
Plus, you can't expect me to pick winning games all the time, even the doot bot doesn't work like that 😂😂

That goes with my mum also, her shop is close to a bet naija shop and one baba Ijebu(Lotto). This makes my brother to develop interest in playing bet and also want to work at the lotto shop. My Mum use prayer to cast that decision away 😁😁😁😁 the fear of her money getting ruin at bet was real and she believes betting is for unserious human being.
Now both bet naija and Lotto my brother no want 😂

I grew up in an environment where betting was a source of livelihood for people so it's very understandable. It's great that you got another job but working in a game center isn't really bad.

I know a lot of gamblers, It's a downward spiral that sucks you in, especially when you also love the beautiful game of football. It was addictive, but had it been you spent some time learning, maybe several months, you'd have understood how to win games, but this wouldn't come without some incredulous losses which might come with consequences. It's not a life one should lead.

I don´t think you would be an addict reader today if you had stayed longer gambling as you would become so addicted to it. Those in it know how to lure others into it staying under the umbrella that you are a lucky girl and do not bother making you bet for them. Football betting can easily be addicted to and it's a game of more of luck. I had a friend always with tickets in his pocket. Whenever we were together, all I got hear is "Oooh, Man U," "Kai, Arsenal cut this ticket," and many more statements of disappointment. It's good that you left that field to ICT.
