red spider lilies of kinchakuda : October 4 2025
i find this entry quite hard to start, there are so many things to say yet so many things better left unsaid. there are so many happenings yet only for a single event. there are so many flowers yet only one kind. it may sound poetic but the venue and the event calls for it. welcome to kinchakuda spider lily display (巾着田曼珠沙華公園).
getting to koma station (高麗駅)

we started leaving home a few minutes past 8 am and reached the venue at around 10. housemate js invited us to this event, i did not even know that there was this yearly event which will end on the 5th of october, a day after we came. i also saw an instagram friend post about the place, so whoever advertised the whole thing did a good job.
the park was in a remote area in saitama prefecture, just a few minutes away the moomin valley park which probably overshadowed the whole area. we started the short hike from koma station (高麗駅). an outskirt station like this having this many people only meant that we were in to something good.

there was no need to check the maps, all of these people were heading to the same place. we traversed through small neighborhoods, over a bridge, met some scarecrow, and walked alongside a river. i even bought some preliminary brownie snack from a mini fair along the way.
the park

at a 500 yen entrance fee (a little over 3 and a quarter), you get to enjoy the park throughout the day. this map of the park shows where the reds are grown at. as we came quite early, there were lots of people still entering. it also drizzled for a bit.

here comes the initial red fields. i was astounded by the great sea of reds. i am colorblind but i could clearly see this bright red. it is just unfortunate that some flowers have already started to wither but nevertheless, fields of red are still present.

---|
we came here for these red ones, commonly called higanbana or even manjushage (曼珠沙華) in japanese. very pretty and delicate looking flowers with long parts which may look like spider legs. but beware as the buds contain some toxic chemicals, poisonous when ingested, very fittingly called corpse flower as its other name. that is why some farmers plan these flowers around the perimeter of their fields to keep pests away.
food

we were there strolling for a couple of hours and right at the middle we found the food section. there was even a monkey performing tricks. some people were even dressed in demon slayer anime characters as these flowers are a central item in that anime.

here is what i got! beef shank stew, fried chicken, milk soft ice, an alcoholic beverage, and coffee: that gave me back my energy. to enjoy the place, i also need to enjoy the food. and true to age, i also bought a wood chopping board. it must really be true how the older you get, the more you tend to appreciate home utensils.
bridge

back to the flowers, there was a bridge area and it seemed that everybody loved this place. it was even more packed than the places earlier.

sprinkles of white versions are also in the park. in a sea of red, these whites stand out like stars in a night sky.
i loved how this picture turned out to be. just very pretty, i wonder how they planted all of these though. i also wondered how these plants live, there were no leaves. so how do they have the energy to even bloom?
crowd

as the park is very wide, all types of people could also be witnessed. some posed. some took photos intently. some with their families. and some with bears.
this park is actually part of a quite extensive hiking trail. i saw some hikers getting off the train earlier, but we were not suited for any hiking. i would only shower in sweat for sure. but how great it would have been to see such beautiful flowers after a long ang tiring hike.
but all was there to witness this flower in bloom. i am submitting above picture to @bucipuci 's #aroundtheworld contest, but honestly any picture of this flower would be fine. and the best way to show them is up close.

i have never seen this much red in my life!

we finally decided to head out of the main park into this wide spacious area. the side banks still had the red spider lilies but the central part is nothing but grass. if my understanding was correct, other flowers will be cultivated in this area in other seasons of the year. so expect some other events and activities in this park for the other times of the year.

we finally getting away from the park. we have crossed some rice paddies and irrigation water. i could see very small fishes in it.

these white flower variants looked so fresh against the greens. if only it wasn't as cloudy as today, these flowers could even glow better.
and the greatest surprise, a yellow variant. it was the only yellow one we saw. among the sea or reds and the stars of white was this singular yellow stalk. amazing!
the park is open all year round with different events per season. for more information about it, you can visit their site as follows.
