the return of the station stamp hunters down the river area : October 10 2025

1000045309.jpg

no matter how many times i take a picture of this area, it is still impossible to capture how poetic it really is. let me justify that for a bit. i cannot say it is outright beautiful, you can clearly see the flaws and the dirt at the sides. but i can say that it is poetic, a wonderful sight of the brightly lit yanagi bridge with the dark and damp boats at the side making it all the more beautiful. it has so much depth and i hope you see it too.

now here we are again with a nightwalk after days of hiatus. my body was looking forward to this, i just love to be out in the elements breathing in air, with the night breeze on your face. housemate js and i decided to continue our station stamp collection. the easy ones were all collected, only the heard to reach ones are left. so we started of at a much familiar station.

akihabara station (秋葉原駅)

1000045300.jpg1000045301.jpg1000045302.jpg

although we have already collected the stamp from this station, this will be our starting point for tonight's adventure. i was surprised by the station itself, a good portion of it now sells desserts. and it is also living up to it's name as the electric town, just look at those ad monitors. we just started but we already gave in to the call of carbs, creme brule donuts anyone?

1000045303.jpg1000045304.jpg

now this is really the start of something new. we were following the train station tracks to the next station. on ground, restaurants! loved how i captured this person peeking from the door as if looking for his companions.

asakusabashi station (浅草橋駅)

1000045305.jpg1000045306.jpg

restaurant after restaurant lined up the street until we reached the next station, a very unassuming one above ground.

1000045308.jpg

and the stamp featured the sumida river fireworks festival, an annual event help every summer. this was again unlike the other jr station stamps i the sense that it did not feature the station kanji character, this featured the festival which probably looks great around this area.

sumida and kanda river intersection

1000045310.jpg1000045311.jpg

the bright yanagi bridge crosses the slight smaller kanda river near the mouth joining the sumida river. the sumida river is probably 3 times wider. floating restaurants are a usual sight. it is lights like these that get me attracted to nightwalks.

ryogoku station (両国駅)

1000045313.jpg

i have featured this station before, this is the other one with a different motif from the other jr stations. it clearly shows sumo which is widely practiced in this area. it was here were i found out that we can recollect station stamps.

1000045315.jpg

sumo wrestler statues lined the streets leading to the station and the sumo arena beside it.

ekoin temple (回向院)

1000045316.jpg
there was this temple near the station but we could not take clear pictures of it because it was so dark. the picture above was on our way out with just the silhouettes clearly seen. the history plaque said that the temple ones hosted sumo matches for quite some time before they were finally transferred to the nearby sumo arena.

bakurocho station (馬喰町駅)

1000045318.jpg

this time, an underground station at the heart of a commercial district. we got a bit lost finding the station, there were three in the area connected to each other.

1000045320.jpg

although the station name had a horse kanji, the station stamp did not even feature anything related to it. instead it featured clothes alluding to the local wholesale clothing industry of the area.

ningyocho area

1000045321.jpg1000045324.jpg

it was quite long walk from the previous station to the next. my hands just took pictures of the very lively izakaya, drinking pubs, filled with office workers from the numerous skyscrapers in the area.

suitengumae station (水天宮前駅)

1000045330.jpg

we finally reached this underground station for the hanzomon line.

1000045325.jpg1000045326.jpg

housemate j and i were particularly thrilled to see an exit 8 which was the central plot of the psychological thriller of the same name just released this year. the movie revolved about detecting anomalies while exiting exit 8. you could probably watch the movie now in your favorite streaming platforms.

1000045328.jpg

the station stamp featured this new train line called series 18000 used by the hanzomon train line. released in 2021, it is a modern train designed to be compatible to a future fully automated train operation system.

hatchobori station (八丁堀駅)

1000045333.jpg

the station nearest the office, naturally i have already collected the stamp before. sadly, i do not know why the stamp featured those elements. the station is quite a minor one so it seems that we have limited information about it.

1000045336.jpg

but i hope you still remember the chuo-ohashi bridge. what a stunning night view, it has probably been 3 months since the last time i saw the bridge, but it was a first crossing the bridge on foot.

tsukuda area

1000045339.jpg1000045340.jpg

the area across the bridge was a mix of offices and apartment complexes. they had unique installations though making you wonder what this place really is for. since it is a reclaimed area, i guess imagination is the limit.

etchujima station (越中島駅)

1000045341.jpg1000045342.jpg

crossing the aioi bridge, we have finally entered koto ward. we are entering through a port area so it is but natural to see anchors displayed. a marine science university and a museum with a real life 19th century ship is also in the area.

1000045343.jpg1000045345.jpg1000045346.jpg

officially the last stop of this nightwalk, this is the first time to walk around koto ward. i know that @appleeatingapple lives in this ward but i have never been to her apartment.

1000045348.jpg

the very first station stamp for this ward, it featured the 19th century ship mentioned earlier, the meiji maru. Emperor Meiji sailed on the ship in 1876, from aomori to hakodate, and then to yokohama.

it was very good to be back walking long distances. i always enjoy nightwalks like this where i could see wonderful sights. hope you had fun exploring these places with me.

as always, AMPING KANUNAY!
