A sad day

Ayrton Senna's accident and subsequent death are some of those events that will stick with you for the rest of your life. One that makes you remember little details from the day, like the weather and what you did before and after the event.

I was only eight years old, but my father had already imprinted the mythological figure of Ayrton Senna in my imagination, and I followed and cheered for him every Sunday.

GOAT! https://www.ayrtonsenna.com.br/

But F1 came to an end for me on that fateful day. It was the final race I saw that year, and the last one I followed from start to finish for many years.

I believe the vast majority of Brazilians felt the same way. On that day, we lost more than just a Brazilian athlete; we also lost everything he represented outside of sports.

Brazilians love sports, but more than that, we enjoy rooting for others, sharing their disappointments, and celebrating their triumphs.

So we find it difficult to follow any sport if we don't have someone to root for.

A TV show brought me back to F1

That shifted for me in Formula 1 in 2021. I changed my mind after a friend of mine told me about Formula 1: Drive to Survive, a Netflix documentary series.

Netflix

The series will take a look behind the scenes of the drivers and teams during the 2018, 2019, and 2020 seasons. It showcases the entire drama of the championship race, including the driver rivalry, the suffering and problems of the smaller teams, the parallel championship between the teams in the middle of the table, and all of the politics.

I had no idea of the complexity behind the scenes because the last time I followed the sport, I was just a child and a fan. This reawakened my interest in F1, and even though there was no Brazilian in the competition, I decided to return to the sport and watch the 2021 season, 27 years after my last race.

I couldn't have chosen a better moment to return.

This is a good time to watch F1

The season is looking fantastic. The title competition between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen is heated, and the winner may not be decided until the final race. These are two geniuses of comparable technical degrees. The title will be defined in the details.

Hamilton vs Verstappen

Given how evenly matched the competition between the two drivers is, I'm unable to predict who will win. Hamilton, in my opinion, is more efficient and has a stronger mental game than Verstappen. Red Bull, on the other hand, has been more successful in pit stop strategies, frequently undercutting Mercedes cars.

This is the first time I've been able to watch a sport only for the spectacle, with no one to cheer for.

And what a show the 2021 season has been. Each race had its level of drama, excitement, and detail that shifted the podium in unexpected ways.

The 2022 season is expected to be much better. The FIA's proposed revisions promise to level out the disparities between cars and make podiums be defined by arm wrestling and technique.

If you, like me, have at some point abandoned F1, now is a great time to come back. With two drivers having a chance to win the title, the next five races promise to be dramatic.

If you are unfamiliar with the sport, I recommend viewing the Netflix series to catch up on the teams and drivers involved.

GOAT! https://www.ayrtonsenna.com.br/

I really came back at the right time. I've been having a great time watching the races.

In the same way that I dropped out, several people close to me did as well. And I've been trying to get them back into the sport.

Good to hear from someone here who is also a fan. It's already something in common for us to talk about!

So who are you rooting for this season? Any guesses on who will be the champion?

I am also in that mode. I can't miss a race!

What did you think of last Sunday's race? I think Mercedes' strategy was bad and took away Hamilton's chance of victory.

Are you rooting for anyone?
