(ESP-ENG) De celebrar al futbol terminamos en polémica // From celebrating soccer, we ended up in controversy. [OPINION]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Yesterday was supposed to be one of those afternoons where those of us who are fans of this incredible sport would enjoy a gala that some call "The Oscars of soccer" where the best players of the year are awarded, NOT of the past season. Today that discussion continues with those who do not know how to differentiate one thing from the other; besides understanding that this golden ball rewards individual achievements and statistics and not collective or at least that's how we are told that it is the thing.
It is very complicated to know if these awards are really rigged and if within this magazine there is a black hand that pulls the strings, the truth is difficult to be certain of that and basically because you can not believe everything that appears on the internet. It is also true that everything that surrounds FIFA, I say this because for the election of the winner FIFA dates are also taken into account, there will always be doubts because things that have happened and because people are not stupid.
The thing is that Messi, apparently, won this year's Ballon d'Or only because he was able to win the Copa America with Argentina. Was he decisive for that to happen? - A little, but not entirely. Is that reason enough? - I certainly don't think so. And since when is a tournament like the Copa America SO decisive when it comes to choosing the winner of this award in question? - There are definitely a lot of questions to be asked.
If we go back a bit when Chile won the Cup in 2016 Arturo Vidal was a FUNDAMENTAL piece for that to happen in addition to the fact that in that year he won the league with Bayern and the German cup. They will tell me over here that Vidal doesn't score Messi's goals and it's true but this year it's also true that NO ONE scored more goals than Robert Lewandowski, so, then?.....
Since January until last week he has not tired of scoring goals, his record in the Champions League is crazy, in the middle of the year he won the Golden Boot in Europe because he scored the most goals in the whole continent and to top it off he won the Bundesliga, the Club World Cup and the German Super Cup. So if we go to numbers, I can say it, in my opinion it was a robbery what they did to the Bayern striker.
And look, I consider Messi in the top 3 of the best players in history but I really don't understand how all this happened. And I don't understand it because we have to count the same way what he has done with PSG and we can summarize it in one word: NOTHING; it has been about four months where Messi has not been seen to take off or be decisive for his team and those are things that should also be taken into account.
Lewandowski is 33 years old so at least 3-4 at a good level will still be left for him in high level soccer, I think he is a player who deserves to have a Ballon d'Or. In fact Messi acknowledged at yesterday's gala that last year's award that was not carried out because of the pandemic has to be awarded and recognized for the Pole and I really hope so.
Poland is in the playoffs for a ticket to the World Cup in Qatar, which will be held at this time next year. I believe that if he keeps the beastly pace he has and manages to qualify with his country for the World Cup, we can count on Robert to be a strong candidate for the next edition.
Anyway, Messi was the winner and with yesterday's award he already has 7 golden balls in his possession. The closest player to that number is Cristiano Ronaldo with 5 and unless he has a dream 2022 I don't think he can opt for that award again but with CR7 you never know. Mbappé was ninth, doubtful position too and Jorginho third: a player who won Champions League and Eurocup. Speaking of the Brazilian nationalized Italian, why didn't he win the award and Luka Modric did? - another question I leave up in the air.
Undoubtedly, these are awards that generate more marketing than anything else with this type of decisions because at the end of the day what is talked about in the sports world is them and this makes more and more people interested but also that a huge amount of people underestimate their importance and do not take them into account. It is a matter of justice and recognition and for this humble servant both things were conspicuous by their absence last night in France.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
Hugs to all, see you next time!
