El día de ayer se corrió la novena carrera de la actual temporada en Canadá en el circuito Gilles Villeneuve, uno que históricamente nos ha brindado emociones y grandes carreras por las características del mismo. Es una pista con tres zonas de DRS lo que "facilita" enormemente el adelantamiento haciendo que el espectáculo esté un poco más garantizado. La cosa es que el día de ayer no estábamos viendo lo que se esperaba, estaba siendo una carrera bastante lineal y sin sobresaltos hasta que llegaron los Safety Car, dos virtuales y uno en pista, para dar un poco el golpe en la mesa de las estrategias en lo que a cambio de neumáticos se refiere.
Yesterday the ninth race of the current season took place in Canada at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, one that has historically given us emotions and great races due to its characteristics. It is a track with three DRS zones which "facilitates" overtaking enormously, making the show a little more guaranteed. The thing is that yesterday we were not seeing what was expected, it was being a fairly linear and uneventful race until the Safety Car arrived, two virtual and one on track, to give a little blow to the table of strategies as far as tire change is concerned.
El campeonato venía bastante parejo con un Verstappen solido en la punta, un Checo Pérez tratando de escalar ciertas posiciones y un Leclerc que no ha tenido las mejores de las suertes que digamos en los últimos premios ubicándose de tercero. El tema con el monegasco es que por un cambio en la unidad de potencia tenía una penalización encima que lo hizo salir en la posición 19 por lo que si quería pescar puntos iba a tener trabajo que hacer. La realidad es que todo estaba en bandeja para que Red Bull ampliara esa ventaja tanto con sus dos pilotos como en la lucha por el campeonato de equipos pero las cosas no siempre salen como se planean y prueba de ello fue lo sucedido el día de ayer.
The championship was pretty even with a solid Verstappen in the lead, a Checo Perez trying to climb certain positions and a Leclerc who has not had the best of luck in recent awards, placing third. El sábado, día de clasificación, día de la pole position llegaba una visita a Montreal que le dio otro color a la sesión sabatina, llegaba la lluvia y con ella ciertas sorpresas que obviamente muchos no esperábamos ver. Fernando Alonso con su Alpine venía demostrando que en la lluvia aparentemente se sentía algo cómodo y eso se reflejaba en sus tiempos tanto en las prácticas como en la clasificación final al punto que terminó segundo por detrás del neerlandés. El otro que también estuvo a la altura fue el compatriota de Alonso, Carlos Sainz con el Ferrari quien terminó de tercero.

Otra de las cosas que se vieron fueron por ejemplo el puesto 10 para el chino Zhou Guanyu con el Alfa Romeo, primera vez desde que está en la máxima categoría que lo logra y los puestos cinco y seis para los dos pilotos de Hass, con esto tenemos que Mick Schumacher conseguía su mejor posición desde que debutó el año pasado. Eran unos puestos que ilusionaban porque podíamos ver una buena carrera del hijo de la leyenda pero al final el destino fue otro. La verdad es que teníamos una partida un poco rara y variopinta en relación a lo que veníamos observando cosa a mi me parece increíble.

Llegamos al día de la carrera y el panorama era otro, un sol radiante y un cielo azul daba la bienvenida al circuito Gilles Villeneuve después de dos años de ausencia, condiciones perfectas para un día de carrera. Alonso había dicho que desde el principio iba a atacar a Verstappen por lo que esa primera curva en la largada inicial iba a ser determinante. Pero bueno, daba inicio el gran premio y con él la escapada a toda velocidad de Max dejando atrás a sus escoltas Alonso, Sainz y un poco más atrás a Hamilton que había salido de cuarto. Como dije la lluvia benefició a Alonso pero ya con las condiciones que estábamos viendo los resultados iban a ser otros y fue así como apenas en la vuelta tres Sainz pasa al segundo lugar dejando atrás al asturiano. No hay comparación entre el Ferrari y el Alpine.
We arrived at the race day and the panorama was different, a bright sun and a blue sky welcomed the Gilles Villeneuve circuit after two years of absence, perfect conditions for a race day. Alonso had said he was going to attack Verstappen from the beginning, so that first corner at the start was going to be decisive. But well, the grand prix started and with it Max's breakaway at full speed leaving behind his escorts Alonso, Sainz and a little further back Hamilton who had started from fourth. As I said the rain benefited Alonso but with the conditions we were seeing the results were going to be different and so it was as soon as on lap three Sainz moves to second place leaving behind the Asturian. There is no comparison between the Ferrari and the Alpine.
La carrera mantenía su curso con Verstappen solido en punta, un Pérez que estaba tratando de salir de la posición trece y un Leclerc haciendo lo mismo pero desde aún más atrás. Vuelta 10 y primer Virtual Safety Car, el Checo se iba de largo mientras que su carro se iba apagando poco a poco y con el las posibilidades de Red Bull de seguir ampliando su ventaja con los dos pilotos. Una lastima por el mexicano que se quedaba sin puntear después de varios premios haciendo un muy buen trabajo. Este VSC hizo que Max, muy temprano en la carrera, cambiara a cauchos de goma dura, una estrategia arriesgada pero que al final por otras cosas dio resultado.
The race maintained its course with Verstappen solidly in the lead, a Perez who was trying to get out of position thirteen and Leclerc doing the same but from even further back. Lap 10 and first Virtual Safety Car, Checo was going long while his car was going out little by little and with it the chances of Red Bull to continue extending its lead with the two drivers. A pity for the Mexican who was left without a point after several awards doing a very good job. This VSC made Max, very early in the race, change to hard rubber tires, a risky strategy but in the end for other reasons it paid off.

Todo esto hizo que Alonso se mantuviera en las primera posiciones pero no por mucho ya que con neumáticos nuevos Verstappen venía como un torpedo y en cuestión de 4 a 5 vueltas el piloto de Red Bull recuperó el segundo lugar y con el el ímpetu de buscar la punta quien estaba bajo el mando de Sainz quien no paró con aquel VSC. Pero no iba a haber problemas porque en la vuelta 20 Mick Schumacher se iría afuera de la misma manera que Pérez y con este segundo VSC Sainz entraría a pits. La carrera estaba siendo un quítate tu para ponerme yo entre Max y Carlos, Alonso perdiendo posiciones y Hamilton ya de tercero. Hay que decir que en esta carrera se vieron a los Mercedes un poco más competitivos que en premios anteriores, algo que se agradece la verdad.
All this made Alonso stay in the first positions but not for long because with new tires Verstappen came like a torpedo and in a matter of 4 to 5 laps the Red Bull driver regained second place and with the momentum of looking for the lead who was under the command of Sainz who did not stop with that VSC. The race was being a race between Max and Carlos, Alonso losing positions and Hamilton already in third. Así seguimos por un buen rato, a todas estas ya Leclerc a la altura de la vuelta 30 estaba en la sexta plaza, es decir, había adelantado trece posiciones, una locura si me preguntan. Hay que considerar el auto que tiene el cual es mucho más rápido que el de muchos y el hecho de que para ese momento habían transcurrido 2 VSC, por más que sea son hechos que afectan. Pero no sería el ultimo ya que gracias Tsunoda en la vuelta 49 tenemos el tercer Safety Car, la diferencia es que esta vez si lo tenemos en pista. Aquí se abriría una nueva carrera, 20 vueltas de pura adrenalina hasta el final del premio.

De acá hasta el final sería una batalla cuerpo a cuerpo entre Verstappen y Sainz, una en la que se vería quien podría tener el carro más rápido y quien sería capaz de mantener la presión controlada. Sainz venía con unos cauchos más nuevos pero Verstappen tenía un ritmo envidiable y durante 20 vueltas fue así. Sainz hizo todo lo posible para adelantar a Max pero no fue posible ni siquiera con los DRS, y es que la manera de pilotear del campeón es única. Es muy complicado pasarlo, es un piloto que maneja muy bien la presión y los nervios a pesar que de vez en cuando puede llegar a ser bastante temerario. La cosa es que vimos un gran cierre en donde la distancia del primero al segundo nunca fue mayor a un segundo, una verdadera batalla campal.

Con esta victoria Max Verstappen conseguiría su sexto triunfo de nueve posibles y con el esa ventaja por sobre sus compañeros seguiría ampliándose. El podio lo completó Lewis Hamilton después de un buen rato que no lo veíamos. Buena carrera para los pilotos de Alfa Romeo que sumaron importantes puntos y los dos Alpine que aunque a Alonso sufrió una sanción todavía quedó en la novena plaza e igualmente sumó.
With this victory Max Verstappen would get his sixth win out of nine possible and with it that advantage over his teammates would continue to widen. The podium was completed by Lewis Hamilton after a long time we had not seen him. Con esas posiciones la carrera por el campeonato quedaría con Verstappen con 175 puntos, el Checo sin sumar sigue de segundo con 129 y Leclerc quien terminó quinto en una gran carrera se acercó con 126, es decir, tan solo tres puntos separan al segundo del tercero. Russell con 111 y Sainz con 102 completas los primeros 5 en una pelea por que cada vez está más cerrada. La próxima carrera será el gran premio de Gran Bretaña en el increíble circuito de Silverstone en dos semanas, lugar donde se vivió una gran tensión el año pasado, veremos que sucederá el próximo tres de Julio.
