(ESP-ENG) Ganando todo es alegría // Winning is all joy!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Yesterday was the end of the FIFA day with a series of friendly matches and others corresponding to the Nations League where there were some very interesting matches, including the last game of the Vinotinto in their stay in Austria. As we already know, the team coached by Pekerman came from a rather poor and mediocre performance against the Icelandic national team, one in which we saw a totally blurred team, without order, without connections and above all without spirit or attitude. But there was an opportunity to try, at least minimally, to wash their faces and close these friendlies with at least a more worthy performance than the one seen on Thursday.
Yesterday arrived and the truth is that I wanted to see an improvement in the Vinotinto's performance, I did not want to think that what happened on Thursday against Iceland was the absolute reality of a team that man for man is very good but when it comes to committing themselves and sweating the shirt is where the problems came. When the official lineup of what would be the starting eleven came out, I saw something that surprised me, Juampi Añor was in the starting lineup. This could not be bad news because we all know the quality of Añor and that he has always been expected in the Vinotinto to display the good soccer he has. But not only that, but they would also start with Soteldo and Savarino, that is, three attacking midfielders. First time that the three of them played together with Pekerman, it did not look bad.
And indeed, it did not look bad at all. The Vinotinto came out yesterday with a face that had not been seen for a long time, from the first minutes proposing a game, strong pressure from the midfield upwards, good ball handling which led to a wide possession and one of the most requested things, those connections and filtered passes between that offensive line formed by the aforementioned trident and a Salomón Rondón very engaged in the match. So much so that with goals from Rondón Savarino, Chancellor and Josef Martínez, the Vinotinto crushed the UAE who were never a match for the Creoles, it must be said, a very weak team that never proposed anything during the 90 minutes. The good thing is that the goals came in all forms, passes between the lines, pressure in the area, set pieces and aerial play and the fourth thanks to a very good play by Josef. A good repertoire indeed.
So, should we celebrate yesterday's victory? - Well, I think so, because regardless of the opponent, the attitude and the change in mentality was very noticeable, yesterday there was a purpose and an idea of the game that they fulfilled for about 80 minutes because at the end they slowed down a little but without being anything serious. The thing is to keep this barrier always high. It is also true that we can't play against every national team with yesterday's scheme because it is one that demands a lot of defensive work and sacrifice, but as long as we keep the momentum and the desire to play a good role, at least that's enough for me. I still believe in Pekerman but EVERYTHING will depend on how much these players can contribute on the field.
Crossing the pond we arrived to the old continent where a match was played where many things would be defined, such as the last classified to the final four to be played in June next year. Spain and Portugal were fighting for that last place to be together with Croatia, the Netherlands and a very surprising Italy to decide who would be the champion. Spain is a team that has not been doing very well, their performance has not been as expected and not because they have not won their games but because of their style of play; it is a team that has a lot of the ball but does not generate danger, does not approach the area which leads to their games being a little gray. But they still win, they may not be showy but they do the job.
On the other hand, Portugal, which I believe is the antonym of Spain, the Portuguese are a very direct team, who play counterattack, filtered passes and seek to reach the area in 3 passes at most. Everything described above was what happened yesterday with the difference that Portugal's gunpowder was wet, because yes, Unai Simon was Spain's star player, saving the ball on more than one occasion. While the team led by Luis Enrique knew how to take advantage of the changes in the second half with the incorporation of Pedri, Gavi and Nico Williams who really promises a lot. With these changes, Spain had a different face and its offensive game grew completely and Morata took advantage of an assist from Williams to seal the match.
Part of Portugal's performance, which was not bad, but lacked more forcefulness and effectiveness, is due to the streak that Cristiano is going through, who has not scored in four games, a streak that the Portuguese star has not seen for a long time. Portugal has to be calm because the role they played was good in view of the World Cup. Obviously I do not see them as favorites and neither do I see Spain as favorites to win the World Cup, but I do believe they can be more decisive than the Spaniards. There is something about Spain that doesn't convince me, they are not the power they were 10 years ago despite having a very good and top generation. But I think and answering myself that nowadays what you have to be is effective and not showy, the time of tiki taka and jogo bonito is behind us.
In other news, Brazil continues with an overwhelming pace in their preparation for Qatar. Yesterday they beat Tunisia 5-1 and before that 4-0 to Bolivia with an exhibition of Raphinha and a Neymar who is two goals away from reaching Pele's mark as top scorer of the national team. While Scaloni's Argentina, renewed until the 2026 World Cup, is also still in search of the world record of 37 matches without losing, they have 35 with Messi in an absolute state of grace. In the last three games Messi has 9 GOALS for Argentina, a madness everywhere you look.
If you ask me, here are the two clear favorites to win the World Cup, I do not see any other team to overshadow what Brazil and Argentina are doing, maybe the Netherlands surprise a little but otherwise I do not see anyone else. France is very difficult to repeat and the state of Germany, Spain, England I do not know if it is enough to take the cup. We are less than two months away from the event but there is still a lot of soccer in between and right now the priority should be to take care of injuries because that is a factor that can influence the performances in Qatar.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you next time!
