Este fin de semana en por lo menos dos ligas parecen que se dieron resultados de cara al cierre de la temporada. Al día de hoy faltan 6 fechas que si bien es cierto pueden ser capaces de definir mucho también pueden marcar una tendencia "irreversible". Estamos hablando de la Premier League y de La Liga en particular y es que como les decía pasaron cosas que pueden que nos den luces sobre el futuro a corto plazo. Todo se resume en 4 clubes: Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid y Barcelona. Esa lucha entre ellos por dar caza al otro puede que haya llegado al punto de no retorno aunque repito, todo puede cambiar.
This weekend, at least two leagues seemed to see results that would shape the end of the season. With six matchdays remaining, these could certainly be decisive, but they could also establish an irreversible trend. We're talking about the Premier League and La Liga in particular, and as I mentioned, events unfolded that might shed light on the near future. It all boils down to four clubs: Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. Their battle to catch the others may have reached the point of no return, although, as I said, everything can change.
El Arsenal es el actual líder de la Premier con 70 puntos mientras que los ciudadanos, de manera impresionante, se pusieron con 64 unidades, a 6 del liderato. ¿Cuando cambia todo? - pues este fin de semana cuando los dirigidos por Arteta se les ocurrió la brillante de idea de perder contra el Bournemouth, equipo de mitad de tabla, que había empatado sus últimos 4 partidos y jugando en el Emirates de Londres. Lo realmente llamativo es que este club le hizo un gran partido al Arsenal, le supo plantar cara al líder al punto de irse a arriba en par de ocasiones para así terminar ganando por 1-2. Pero lo "trágico" no fue tanto esta derrota sino el panorama que ahora tienen los Gunners frente al City. Los de Guardiola tienen un partido menos y el domingo se enfrentan entre ellos con el antecedente más reciente de la Carabao en mente. Es decir, tanto el Arsenal como el City dependen de si mismos para ganar la Premier y eso pensaría yo se va a definir este fin de semana.

This past weekend, when Arteta's men had the brilliant idea of losing to Bournemouth, a mid-table side who had drawn their last four matches and were playing at the Emirates Stadium in London. What's truly remarkable is that Bournemouth put up a great fight against Arsenal, challenging the league leaders to the point of taking the lead twice before ultimately winning 2-1. But the "tragic" part wasn't so much the defeat itself, but rather the situation the Gunners now face against City. Guardiola's men have a game in hand, and on Sunday they face each other, with the recent Carabao Cup tie fresh in their minds. In other words, both Arsenal and City control their own destiny in the Premier League title race, and I think that will be decided this weekend.

El City ganando todo lo que le queda es campeón; el Arsenal ganando todo lo que queda es campeón. ¿El detalle? - el partido del domingo. Hace unas semanas hablamos de lo cómodo que estaba el panorama para los dirigidos por Arteta, ahora están con mucha presión encima, eliminados de la FA, perdieron la Carabao y ahora con la Premier un poco comprometida. Me parece increíble como el Arsenal hace todo bien en gran parte de la temporada para después llegar a un punto en donde deshacen todo con los pies, nunca mejor dicho. No tienen la Premier perdida pero si creo que están muy comprometidos, no pueden haber fallos de acá en adelante. Por otro año más nos tocará ver al Arsenal sufrir.

A few weeks ago, we talked about how comfortable things were for Arteta's men, but now they're under immense pressure. They've been eliminated from the FA Cup, lost the Carabao Cup, and now their Premier League title hopes are somewhat compromised. It's incredible how Arsenal does everything right for most of the season only to reach a point where they completely unravel it, literally. They haven't lost the Premier League title yet, but I do think they're in serious trouble. They can't afford any more slip-ups from here on out. For another year, we'll have to watch Arsenal suffer.
Cruzando unas cuantas fronteras hacia el sur llegamos a España donde la cosa no está muy diferente a Inglaterra. En La Liga faltan 7 fechas, 21 puntos por disputarse y el Barcelona le lleva 9 de diferencia al Real Madrid, 79 a 70 respectivamente. Dicha diferencia se incrementó este fin de semana cuando el Real Madrid volvió a dejarse puntos esta vez contra un equipo de medio tabla, el Girona, con un marcador de 1-1. Pensar que los blancos vienen de perder contra un equipo que está luchando por no descender, el Mallorca. Por otro lado el Barcelona ganó el derbi catalán contra el Espanyol por 4-1. Lo curioso es que pasa algo similar que en la Premier, el 10 de mayo hay un clásico, pienso que no es tan definitorio como algunos pueden opinar pero si que puede ser interesante.
Crossing a few borders south, we arrive in Spain, where things aren't too different from England. In La Liga, there are 7 matchdays left, 21 points up for grabs, and Barcelona has a 9-point lead over Real Madrid, 79 to 70 respectively. This gap widened this past weekend when Real Madrid dropped points again, this time against mid-table Girona, in a 1-1 draw. It's worth noting that Los Blancos are coming off a loss against Mallorca, a team fighting to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, Barcelona won the Catalan derby against Espanyol 4-1. Interestingly, something similar to the Premier League is happening: there's a Clásico on May 10th. I don't think it's as decisive as some might believe, but it could certainly be an interesting match.

En este caso y a diferencia de la Premier, el Barcelona tiene todos los números para llevarse la liga, tendría que pasar un verdadero pinchazo culé y que el Madrid mejore considerablemente su juego para cambiar la tendencia. Y honestamente les digo, no se que es menos probable, si una caída en el rendimiento del Barca o que el Madrid levante vuelo. Creo que el Barcelona va a ser el campeón de la Liga; no puedo decir lo mismo de la Premier aunque si nos basamos en la historia reciente de los últimos años se pudiera apostar a que el Arsenal va a hacer algo para quedarse en el camino y así el City llevarse la Premier. Si me apuran, me inclino por ese escenario. Ligas definidas, si las cosas obvias terminan ocurriendo.
In this case, unlike the Premier League, Barcelona has every chance of winning the league. They would have to suffer a real setback and Real Madrid would have to significantly improve their play to change the trend. And honestly, I don't know which is less likely: a drop in Barça's performance or Real Madrid taking off. I think Barcelona will be the La Liga champions; I can't say the same for the Premier League, although if we look at recent history, we could bet that Arsenal will do something to avoid elimination, allowing City to win the Premier League.
