(ESP-ENG) Que nos dejó este 2021 en el deporte? // What did this 2021 leave us in sports?
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
The year 2021 was one where things returned a little to "normal" after having spent almost 9 months in a total encirclement in 2020 due to the pandemic. It promised to be a great year as great events were expected: the Olympics, the Euro Cup, the Copa America and everything else that happens regularly; and so it was, the truth is that it was a great 2021 where we had many news and events that made history and marked the sport.
What I intend here is to mention what was most important for me based on my sporting tastes, clearly I will leave some out and it will be because they are sports of which I am not as fanatical as I would like. So let's refresh our memory a bit and see what was the most important sporting events of 2021.
Undoubtedly the event par excellence of this 2021 were the Olympic Games. Some games marked by the Covid and that is why we enjoy them without public is one of the most joyful events for the large number of sports disciplines that we see there. Athletics and swimming are for me the great attractions of these games, games that were once again led by the United States with a total of 113 medals and 39 gold medals.
But we must mention several things: the gold medal of Yulimar Rojas with a world record, Daniel Dhers with his silver medal and in weightlifting Julio Mayora and Keydomar Vallenilla also with silver were in charge of putting the name of Venezuela on high in those games with four medals. The way I live the Olympic Games has always been with a lot of passion since I am a great fan of sports in general and if we add to that listening to the national anthem in an award ceremony, it is a very nice feeling.
The one that no one bet on to win the cup was the one that in the end turned out to be the winner. Italy came from a process with many bumps in the road to the point of being left out of the Russia 2018 World Cup, a failure that generated a very big crisis, calling into question many of the figures of the national team. But Mancini arrived and with a work of ants managed to recover the game and the confidence of the Italians and win the Euro against England at the legendary Wembley Stadium, that is, they played that final as visitors, to add one more point of difficulty.
Lionel Messi's Argentina had achieved it, the first title of "la pulga" with the Albiceleste, a Copa America and against nothing more and nothing less than their usual rival, Brazil. With Argentina I think the same thing happened as with Italy, no one thought or bet that they would win the cup because that was always what happened, they always lacked an extra to reach the goal and for example that World Cup final they lost against Germany in 2014. This time it was not like that, they came out with desire and with a clear objective and took the tournament playing as visitors because it was in Brazil, besides Messi knew that it would probably be his last chance to win something with his country. I repeat, the similarities between Italy and Argentina are impressive.
Talking today about who can be the best tennis player in history is very complicated because to our delight in the same time three monsters coincided: Nadal, Federer and the Serbian Novak Djokovic. In this issue beyond the game and trophies affects a lot the heart and affection that each fan feels for his player so Federer in that department I think he would be the most loved but the present that Nole is having is incredible. In this 2021 he won THREE Grand Slams (Australia, Roland Garros and Wimbledon) to reach 20 and reach these two beasts I mentioned before. So, which one is the best? - Because of the future he has left and the high probabilities that he will continue making history, I'm leaning towards Novak. I think he will surpass Nadal and Federer without any doubt and this 2021 we witnessed the beginning of that path.
The Dutchman, against all odds, won the F1 world championship. I say it that way because everything seemed to indicate that Hamilton, by mere experience, would take it in the last race but it was not so. The truth is that it was an incredible year 2021 in Formula 1 because from the beginning there was always a battle between the Red Bull driver and the Mercedes driver that never waned, in fact, as the races went by, the more interesting the competition became. For me it is important because I have been following Verstappen's career since ever and seeing him win his first title is something that makes me very happy because for what he did during the season he more than deserved to win it. The 2022 looks even better and we will see what Max is made of.
The SURPRISE of the year within the UFC and watch out if not within the world of contact sports. The Venezuelan Julianna Peña snatched the title from the almighty Amanda Nunes, the best fighter in history. The UFC has a characteristic and it is that it is very unpredictable, why? - Because even though there are always favorites, if you let your guard down for a second, the night is over. There are also better fighters than others, people with more level and experience but above all there are those who have a lot of heart and grit and one of them was "The Venezuelan Vixen". What was seen in that fight was the meaning of going out with everything, physical and heart and take what you deserve and what you think is yours. Pena took Nunes down like very few others had done and against all odds and what seemed like a routine night ended up being one of the most epic in the UFC in many years.
For me these were the big news of this year. I know I didn't talk about baseball and the World Series won by the Atlanta Braves after almost 30 years or Miguel Cabrera's home run record, the NBA or the NFL itself, but these are sports that although I watch from time to time, I am not a great follower and connoisseur. I leave those to those who really know about it.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well friends that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
A hug to all, see you next time!
