(ESP-ENG) ¿Sorpresas en la Champions? - [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.

It's Champions League week, and we're experiencing the first leg of the quarterfinals. I've always said that this competition is a completely different world from the "everyday" experience of domestic leagues. It's always been known and seen that no matter how you're playing each weekend, the Champions League will always be a unique test. I say this because one of the matches we saw yesterday was the second leg between Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, after Barcelona's comfortable 2-1 victory last weekend. You'd think their paths would be the same, but the truth is, they weren't. What we saw yesterday was different.
Did Barcelona play better yesterday? That's the question, or rather the assertion, many people are making; I would think so. The issue is that the Catalan side's game focused solely on exploiting Lamine's individual skills, as collectively they didn't look as cohesive as they usually do. The substitution of Pedri at halftime was a prime example. Certainly, those changes helped the team considerably, but having to do without one of their best players was a sign. Another factor that clearly changes everything was Cubarsí's sending off—yes, another red card, adding to the one he received himself and others for Araujo and Eric Garcia. It's unacceptable that Barcelona is getting used to having players sent off in Champions League knockout matches; that's simply not normal.

Atlético had three shots on goal, two of which resulted in goals: a stunning free kick from Julián Álvarez and a striker's goal from Sørloth. But that wasn't enough for the Colchoneros; they had to contain a Yamal who tried everything and a team that unleashed a relentless high press in the second half. Now Barça will have to pull off a miracle, another comeback or at least an attempt at one, like in the Copa del Rey, but this time away from home and with fewer goals. I think Flick's men can win by that two-goal margin; they showed it in that Copa del Rey second leg. But once again, they'll face a well-organized team that knows how to play against them. Was this result a surprise? Not really. As I said, Simeone knows how to play against this Barcelona side. The sending-off did affect the game, yes, but they already won 4-0 this season.
The team from the same city but with different colors, Real Madrid, faced Bayern Munich. If there's one inconsistent team, it's Real Madrid. They came into the match after a defeat against Mallorca, a team fighting to avoid relegation, so the pressure was much greater; they couldn't afford another embarrassing performance at home. On the other hand, the Germans, while seemingly perfect, may not have the same ruthlessness as in previous years—it was noticeable in Tuesday's match—but they are still a very intimidating club. On Tuesday, we saw two matches unfold: the first half and part of the second, and the final 20 minutes. The Bavarians were a steamroller, led by Olise and perhaps also Pavlović. Real Madrid were completely outmatched. There are players who aren't up to par with this Real Madrid: Huijsen, Carreras, who had a disastrous game, Rudiger's level is no longer the same, nor is Alexander-Arnold's; and, as always, the defense.
It's true that in the final stages of the match, Real Madrid pressed hard, even managing to pull one back, a goal they deserved, but it wasn't enough. I think Bayern could have sealed the win with another goal, but as I said, that clinical finishing isn't as evident anymore; in fact, their game became a bit diluted due to Madrid's pressure. Both German goals were excellent, the result of errors in play and build-up from Real Madrid, combined with clinical finishing and well-coordinated passing from the visitors. Honestly, it was a great match, just like yesterday's. Was this German victory/Madrid defeat a surprise? - Again, no. Real Madrid hasn't been playing well, even though they've managed to win a couple of matches, like against Manchester City. If they want to beat this Bayern team next week, they'll obviously have to do a lot of things differently.
Arsenal and PSG won. No surprises there. I didn't see the matches, but I understand that the teams that were expected to win, won. We're in for some very entertaining rounds because none of the matches are completely decided; anything can happen, and even more so in the Champions League.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well, that's all for today, folks. I hope you enjoyed it.
¡Hugs to everyone, see you next time!
¡Enhorabuena!
