(ESP-ENG) Tanto nadar... [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.

Football can sometimes be quite poetic, unintentionally delivering matches with profound significance depending on the circumstances of the clubs involved (Champions League Semifinal). "So much effort only to fall short" is a saying that perfectly describes the current situation of a couple of clubs I've discussed at length here, but their stories, especially those of their managers, remain fascinating. It's often said that neither Simeone nor Arteta are winning coaches, but the truth is, the Argentinian has won eight titles with Atlético Madrid and the Spaniard three with Arsenal, so the criticism isn't based on that; it's because they sometimes come so close to glory that it's incomprehensible they don't quite reach it.
Let's start with Atlético de Madrid, who played Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final this Saturday after knocking out Barcelona in a tie that will be remembered for years to come. Simeone's men had the opportunity to win the competition again after 13 years, having last won it in 2013 with Simeone practically a newcomer. But reality has been harsh for the Colchoneros, as they once again fell just short of the title, failing to convert their penalties. It must be said that the match was excellent and very evenly contested, with each team displaying a high level of intensity and skill, and against all odds, Atlético had to come from behind on a couple of occasions.

Conceding a goal after just 15 seconds is a significant blow, but with a sharp Lookman and Julian Alvarez scoring some great goals, they managed to force extra time and eventually penalties. But why does Atlético always lose despite being such a tenacious team? This time it was because they lacked finishing ability, and in my opinion, Sørloth shouldn't have been the first penalty taker, but ultimately, these are the mysteries of football. The fact is, they've come away empty-handed again, but there's still a glimmer of hope: next week they face the other club featured in this review, another team with a reputation for being just as, or even more, unlucky when it comes to winning titles. And yes, we're talking about Arsenal, who have recently been on a downward spiral due to the sudden drop in performance they showed in the first six months of the season.
This slump for the Gunners began somewhat after their Carabao Cup final loss to City. Since then, they've won only one of their last six matches, something unimaginable last year or at the beginning of 2026. The main issue is that yesterday, at Guardiola's City's home ground, they faced each other again in the league, in a crucial match for the Premier League title race. Arsenal remains top, but after yesterday's defeat, they are now three points behind Manchester City, who have a game in hand. This means that if City wins that match, they would draw level on the top spot, and the only tiebreaker would be goal difference, which Arsenal currently holds with a +1 advantage. Along the way, I think one of them will lose or drop points, but the reality is that winning the Premier League now depends entirely on each team.

I think if Arsenal wanted to finish the season a bit more comfortably, they should have won yesterday, but once again they lost when they needed it most. Once again, their reputation as a "small" team was on full display, and they dropped three vital points in the championship race. City were better than Arsenal yesterday; that needs to be emphasized because at no point did I see Arteta's men desperately trying to win the game, perhaps in the final minutes, but only out of sheer urgency. The drama? We'll witness the real drama on the 29th of this month when these two clubs face off to see who can be the least "heartless" team in Europe. The Reds will be looking to make amends for so many Champions League failures, and the English side will be aiming for only their second final in history.

¡Enhorabuena!
