Slam Dunk was revolutionary in its time, a sports anime that managed to compete with Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Pokémon, Sailor Moon, and Captain Tsubasa. It was a sports anime, yes, but about soccer, and that's something that will always be impressive to me. Perhaps these kinds of stories weren't as common back then as they are now, but I think this anime is one of the best of all time. Today, following the trend of my recent reviews, I'm going to talk to you about the best episode in the series, one with a score of 9.6/10. It's episode 59 of the anime's 101 episodes, a true gem full of tension.

Slam Dunk fue una revolución en su momento, un anime deportivo que logró competir con Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Pokemon, Sailor Moon y con los Super Campeones (Captain Tsubasa), un anime de deportes si, pero de fútbol, fue algo que para mi siempre será impresionante. Quizás en aquellos tiempos no era tan común estas historias como los son ahora pero este anime creo que ha sido de los mejores de todos los tiempos. Hoy vengo a hablarte y siguiendo la tónica de mis últimas reseñas, del mejor capítulo que tiene esta trama, uno con una puntuación de 9.6/10. Es el episodio 59 de los 101 que tiene el anime, una verdadera joya llena de tensión.

The context is the same as in all these stories: a team trying to do their best with the players they have. One of those players is Hanamichi Sakuragi, the redhead you see in the picture. He's a very unique guy with an immense desire to do well, but his "lack" of talent sometimes holds him back. In this episode, we see the conclusion of one of their most important matches: Shohoku faced Kainan, the most powerful school in basketball and the reigning champions. The final 45 seconds of a very intense game saw Shohoku rise to the occasion against all odds.

El contexto es el mismo de todas estas historias, un equipo tratando de hacerlo lo mejor posible con las piezas que tiene. Una de las piezas es Hanamichi Sakuragi, el pelirrojo que ven en la foto. Él es un tipo muy particular con unas inmensas ganas de querer hacerlo bien pero su "falta" de talento a veces se lo impide. En este capítulo vemos la conclusión de uno de los partidos más importantes para ellos, Shohoku se veía las caras contra Kainan, el colegio más poderoso en basket y actuales campeones. Los últimos 45 segundos de un partido muy intenso en donde Shohoku a dado la talla contra todo pronóstico.

But what makes this episode so impressive? Sakuragi is the most important character in the anime, and in this episode, he makes a colossal mistake that will define him for the rest of the story. It's one of those experiences that leaves a mark on someone and changes their attitude; it's precisely here that the character's development deepens. Sakuragi is constantly criticized by everyone, both by his teammates and by outsiders, which generates a huge lack of confidence when making important decisions during matches. This lack of confidence is what made this episode so pivotal. But before reaching that point, there were a couple of events that added a lot of excitement to the almost 20-minute episode.

Pero, que es lo que hace tan impresionante este capítulo? - el personaje de Sakuragi es el más importante del anime, en este episodio él comete un error garrafal que lo definirá para el resto de la historia, son de esas experiencias que marcan a alguien y que a partir de eso toman una actitud diferente; es precisamente acá en donde el desarrollo del personaje se vuelve más profundo. Sakuragi es constantemente criticado por todo el mundo, tanto por los de su equipo como por la gente de afuera lo que genera una falta de confianza muy grande a la hora de tomar decisiones importantes dentro del partidos. Esta carencia es lo que hizo que este episodio fuera tan trascendental. Pero para llegar a eso antes hubo un par de acciones que le dieron mucha emoción a los casi 20 minutos de duración capítulo.

45 seconds left, Kainan trailing by two points, exhaustion at its limit, and Shohoku had to do whatever it took to secure the three points needed for victory. A series of rebounds, a three-pointer, and a misplaced pass are what we see here in slow motion, adding even more epicness and tension to an already intriguing finish. It's well known that anime, especially sports anime, strive to maximize the impact of each scene—just ask Captain Tsubasa—but the beauty of Slam Dunk lies in its restraint, which is reserved for crucial moments. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this; the animation is as good as it gets, and I've always maintained that sports anime are incredibly difficult to animate.

45 segundos, la diferencia por dos puntos de Kainan, el cansancio al límite y había que hacer lo que fuera necesario para lograr los 3 puntos para la victoria de Shohoku. Una serie de rebotes, un lanzamiento de un triple y un pase mal dado es lo que vemos aquí en cámara lenta para darle más epicidad y angustia a un cierre que de por si ya era interesante. Se sabe que los anime y sobretodo los deportivos buscan exprimir al máximos las escenas, que lo diga Captain Tsubasa, pero lo bueno de Slam Dunk es que no lo hace siempre sino únicamente en los momentos cruciales. Personalmente me disfruté mucho esto, la animación es tan buena como puede ser además de que siempre he dicho que los anime de deportes son sumamente difíciles de animar.

In the end, Sakuragi is consoled by the team captain, Akagi, in a kind of show of support for everything he did and tried to do in those final 45 seconds. Everyone knows Sakuragi's potential; he was the one who lifted the team's spirits when they were at their lowest, hence the constant demands placed on him. Slam Dunk is a true gem where its characters have real depth, and this episode is a perfect example of that. It's absolutely right to be the highest-rated episode of the entire anime; what happened on that court was absolute madness. I hope this review has convinced those who haven't seen it; it's truly worth watching.

Todo el contexto ayuda, si, pero que nos deja finalmente? - el reconocimiento de un esfuerzo, así no haya terminado como se quería siempre será lo más importante. Al final Sakuragi es consolado por el capitán del equipo, Akagi, en una especie de apoyo por todo lo que hizo e intentó hacer en esos 45 segundos finales. Todos saben del potencial de Sakuragi, fue él quien les subió el ánimo al equipo cuando peor estaban, de ahí a que siempre le exijan más de la cuenta. Slam Dunk es una verdadera joya en donde sus personajes tienen carácter y este episodio es la muestra real de eso. Toda la razón con ser el mejor valorado de todo el anime, lo que se vivió en esa cancha fue una locura total. Espero que esta reseña haya convencido a los que no lo ha visto, de verdad vale mucho la pena.
